Front End Alignment

I think my front end is out. The tires are wearing on the inside on the front ones.

My question is, is there anyway to check the camber without an alignment machine? I think it is out, but I don't want to pay someone to put the shims on the spindle. That's the only way to adjust that, correct?

If I take it in and it's out, then take it home and install the shims, they will charge to put it back up. I guess it's probably cheaper then having them do it.

I also don't really trust having anyone work on my truck. Last place wanted to replace everything including the braket that holds the steering gear box on the frame. They said it was cracked. I took it off to weld it. Ya it was cracked alright, the paint.

Any help would be appreiciated.

Thanks.

jack up the front end
spin the tires
mark in same location with chalk on each(hold chalf to the tire to get a ring around it)
measure half way up on the front of the tire with a string front left tire to the right and record number.
measure half way up on teh rear and record.
should be like 1/8 tow in usually.

to adjust you should be able to turn the tierod with a pipe wrench to adjust.

Camber and caster have to be checked on a machine. If you try checking the way Jimmy described, you will only test tow-in and tow-out and you will have to test it with weight of the vehicle on the ground because the tow will change if you pick it up because they have un-equal length upper and lower control arms.
You can check a front straight axle tow in the air as long as you have NO WEAR in the king pins.
