FREE Oil from VW

As part of the VW diesel settlement we got a $500 debit card that could only be used at a VW dealer. I had to spend it by the end of November. Since we're selling the car back to VW I was having a hard time deciding on what we could possibly want since I have the truck now I don't need another car.

I decided to get Oil for the truck. and this is what I got. Nearly $300 worth. Enough for 2 changes at $10.99/qt

Does anyone think it will be a problem?

I ran a thinner weight oil in my truck one time, and it didn't like it- I was showing significant metal wear on my oil reports. Mine is an 04, so it might be different. My manual says 15W 40 for normal temps or 5W 40 (synthetic) if the temp falls below 0*.

Maybe ask them if they can get a heavier weight oil to swap it with? Good idea, tho.

I would run that synthetic, 5-4 dosent feel much lighter, price is comparable to 2 gallons of walmart rotella 15-40 synthetic/1 gallon Pennzoil synthetic, that's tough decision, with 500 vw bucks that are really 250, you could have optioned 10 tee shirts, 15 license plate frames, pile of discounted nos inventory....

I would stick with 40 weight oil. Once it gets to operating temp the oil will be to viscous with a 30 rating. Also that oil does not meet Dodge or Cummins service grade of CC (obsolete) through CJ (current) rating. Penzoil says ACEA c3-12 which in europe, is ok for diesel applications.
I would use the money for tires, alignments, body work etc.

I put 30 wt in once and lost around a third of my oil pressure when it was at operating temperature. I used my dealer card to buy 3 batteries, 2 for my boat and I gave one to a friend. I used the rest to buy the same oil as you, but I gave it to a friend also. With the exception of a new winter coat for myself, I donated the rest to the christmas angel program, I figured that something good should come out of this fiasco. I am also selling the car back, I just sent in the last of the paperwork. My car only has 13k miles on it, so it will be sold back with 0 miles, resulting in zero miles penalty. VW can take a flying leap at a fast moving freight train, they will never get another cent out of me. Thanks VW, you lying bastiges...Mark

My wife has a 2012 VW jetta TDI as well. We haven't heard from them in regards to the next steps but are eagerly awaiting the cash buyback. Ours has 60K on it though. Still getting a good amount for it though and she wants to get a new Jetta 1.4 Gasser 6 speed next. I have bought two oil and filter changes worth of VW oil and filters and a battery for the Jetta with the 500 dollar gift card already. Not sure what is left on it but probably not much.

I know that it is Cummins blasphemy, but I am considering buying my friend's 2013 Ford f 350 crew cab with the Powerstroke. It has 30k, all highway miles and he want 25k, (he needs to sell). I'll just use the VW money for it and pay the difference, if there is any...Mark

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. I am going to take a real good look at it. He lives in San Jose, but owns the place next to me here in Mexico. He will be here next Sunday and I will take a good long look. I may pass and look at some Rams that are less than 5 years old. I'm sure that they aren't much easier to work on, but at least it's a Cummins...Mark

If you haven't already, you need to go to https://www.vwcourtsettlement.com/en/ to register for the buyback. Do this immediately. Do not delay.

We have about $300 left on the cash card. We'll buy groceries etc... As for the dealer card I spent about $200 on needed maintenance on the car to preserve the buyback value. Honestly, other than a VW cookie cutter and the oil we couldn't see any other thing we wanted from VW.

I love the car but I'm not about to put up with an MPG downgrade ot having that blue stuff tank installed.

I ran the series 3000 5-30 amsoil in my old motor that had something like 250k miles on it

Ran the oil with the bypass filtration system for nearly 30000 miles on one oil change. It was fine. When I Opened the motor up at around 290k miles it still looked pristine inside. Bearings were perfect and the cylinder walls still had all the cross hatching.

So as far as the weight goes, I really doubt it's that big of a deal

Unfortunately, The VW dealer had no higher viscosity oil in stock. My wife usually has her oil changed at the dealer so I can't use it in her car. Does anybody know of a viscosity modifier I could add to the oil? I think the oil quality is fine. I've always had good luck with Pennzoil and this is diesel grade synthetic. According to the FSM 5w30 is OK for cold climates especially for cold cranking. The Oil pressure worries me though I've never had an issue with overheating so my radiator is fine.

Everyone's input is greatly appreciated.

Edwin
