Fixing Up Old Dodge Power Ram(Image Heavy)

Unsure of all the specs on it, I took a few pictures though.

I'll specify that I want to buy this truck because it's my dream type of vehicle.

It belonged to a close family friend who passed away. Before he passed away he sold the majority of his stuff for cheap prices. All the money went to his daughters. I think the truck sold for 300 or 400 dollars. It now belongs to another close family friend. However he never drove it, he just parked it in my grandpas yard. (We share an acreage with him). The truck ran when they parked it. I am considering offering to buy it.

My dad said that I probably would have to pay around 800 just to purchase the truck.

I am considering it, but I'm interested in how much money it would cost me to fix up, since I'm not the greatest with those type of things. I could do some of it myself. But since I'm only 16, I'm more interested in the hole it will leave in my wallet.

Reliability isn't a big deal. I all ready have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 Litre. Which I use to get around in summer and winter.

These are the thing I'm thinking of doing to it, in order of greatest importance to least

Any engine work (Currently unsure what needs to be done, but im assuming that engine wise the truck needs little work)
New, bigger tires (Unsure of size)
Jack it up, (liftjob)
Tailgate for back
New back bumper
Paint job/Remove dents

The mileage on this truck is low, but it has saw some rough miles. Living up north I've saw this thing tear through practically anything imaginable and making it through. Though sometimes it did rely on it's winch.

Will this be worth my time, or ultimately a waste of money? Honesty please.

If I get more engine information, I'll make sure to post that.

P.S. I should mention, that the tachometer has most likely just been rolled back. >_>

I've been coming to that realization myself. I've actually been thinking about it for a week now.

I agree with the others...not worth more then a couple hundred. If it had major sentimental value then go ahead and fix it up, but you can always build another, better truck as a tribute. That think will suck your wallet dry. I run from rust...I've payed through the nose for rust repairs and finally realized it's cheaper to buy a rust free vehicle, and have it shipped, then to pay to have metal replaced. Haven't bought a rusty vehicle since.

Get yourself an early 89-91 Cummins truck and fix that up...better money spent.

Id offer a few hundred for it, then wheel the doors off it

Mine seems to get a new dent every time I start it for some reason....

Might be cuz I gave $250 for it then all the 1/2 ton stuff went away.

Btw: this is what it looks like before it EVER seen a jeep trail

Yeah Crazy Matt,
That is a sweet old Dodge trail war wagon!
Sweet $250 rig.
That 1/2 gasser w/ 100,000 plus miles for $800 that may not start, that is too much $$$.
Maybe you can take off $500 for storage fees for it being in your yard for so long

I hate to say this but the only thing that I would buy the truck for would be the parts, that I could pull off it. Here's a thought for you, sit down at the table and put on paper what your looking for in a truck, if you already have a set of good wheels and what you want is a "play" rig ,might I suggest a 41-73 Power wagon,a 29-75 cornbinder pickup or an old cab-over Jeep pickup [very cool] with the cummins converson Just a thought. anyways write what you are looking for on paper [trust me fixing rust sucks I worked in a body shop for a bit,you really could'nt do much with rust] rust free,an old odd-ball pick-up things like that, thats how I am doing it right now for my next pickup ,best of luck

Crazy mat thats an awesome rig! I love 60's trucks. I almost bought a 1968 W300 with a front mount pto driven Braden MU2 on it. I kick myself every time I think about it! Very rare truck with a poly 318 in it. These trucks actually have lines, and enough steel to build a building. Cool rig.

I just recently pointed out an old 68-70 dodge powerwagon to my wife while we were out one day...and she said she really liked it!! Man if I had known that I might have picked up an old crewcab from that era instead.

So, I guess I should do my own research.

But would it better to just get a body lift kit, or the suspension type lift kit worth the extra money?

Just for if I do end up with a project truck.
