Finally gonna go oil free!
Only a month later, but it finally came in. I did not realize till around a couple months ago that someone, AFE, made an oil free forever filter for our trucks. Definitely well constructed. This is part #11-10030, made for 1993 model years. Purchased it thru Sinister Diesel, as it was on sale.
Tired of oiling my K&N; I've had it for 13 years, 100,000 miles. All that's required for this one is to wash it in warm water and dish soap.

Also, I've been meaning to ask, how do you put a picture in with the thumbnail like you did? I already know how to put them in upside down.

Edwin, I don't think my K&N will work for your 89. I believe 89-91.5 had the filters with a allthread rod going through it from end to end. The 92 and 93 model years, had no hole in the end to accept that rod. I believe the newer K&N filters come with a removable rubber plug, to accept that rod and accommodate 89-93. Mine doesn't, unless you drill one out? Not sure on that one.

I don't know how that happens when I load the pic. When I tap it it comes out straight and normal. Must be how I import it with the way I held the iPad, maybe?

I would like a K&N but new ones are over $100 and don't find any discounted anywhere. I had one in my Jetta and I still have the cleaning and oiling kit for it but I sold the Jetta back to VW.

Edwin, hopefully someone on here can post up a pic of their 89-91.5 filter. I believe the out let ring is different? I want to say drilling the filter out for the rod would be easy enough, but there is something else different. Maybe someone can verify.

I have a K&N filter on my 1991,
yes the filter is held to the cover with a long bolt and wingnut.
I have pictures but Photobucket is holding them for ransom..jerks.

Jim, is the end of the filter towards the turbo different than from a 93? The 93 models of K&N just have a hole at the end, and a seal glued on the inside edge of the perimeter. Doesn't your filter have a 2" rubber collar on the end?

The 89-90 has a soft rubber gasket about 5" in diameter on the filter. the filter is mounted to the air box with a threaded rod.
The outlet on the air box is a little bigger than 4 1/2"

But does the cover of the factory airbox have a round collar on both sides of those earlier years, where one side goes into the filter when closing the lid, then the other outlet on the outside accept the rubber duct coming from the turbo? What I described is what's on my 93. For some reason I think the earlier models use a different air box lid.
Comparing the two filters, the AFE is way better built than that K&N. Yes, the K&N has steel ends, but that sealing gasket is glued on there, and mine has come off and had to be re-glued. The AFE has it built in at both ends. I was wondering why it was harder to clamp down the air box lid on the AFE, and it was because of that raised, built in seal. The inside of the AFE, just like the K&N, has steel expanded metal reinforcement.
Everywhere I look the K&N runs about $110, while that AFE is at around $97. That is a sale price at Sinister Diesel. It is the ProDry, meaning no oiling required. I still use an Outerwears filter sock on these things, as I know nothing filters better than a Donaldson or Wix paper filter.
All this talk about K&N's ruining turbo's and such, I've ran one for 11 years on this truck, and 12 years on a 1991 I bought new. No problems, other than it shows high silicone levels from my oil analysis, due mainly from the oiling of that K&N.

The last two pics help. That's what I thought was different, the lid. Mine for my 93 has a round collar on each side of the lid- one to slip into the filter, and one to slip onto the intake duct. So, basically a coupling for both filter and intake duct.
My K&N won't work on an earlier model truck, unless the lids get swapped out to get rid of the threaded rod design.
