Filled w/ATF Dex3 now tranny acts up

Well my tranny gasket was leaking so I changed it now the tranny is acting weird. When it upshift from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 it slips when upshifting. I read(afterwards) in the owners manual that Dexron III isn't recommonded for fluid changes, only top ups. They call for Dexreon II. I called the local dealership and they said they use Dexron III for that year truck.

Anyone else have this problem with Dexron III? I searched and see that many of you are using it but some say that Type F gives a better shift?

Maybe I better call another dealership and get a second opinion.

I'm pretty sure your supposed to use ATF +3 , you can add up to one quart of dex 3 if you need to. The dealership doesn't know much.

I think DexIII is "slippery-er" then the +3. Probably why you get the slipping at the shifts. Maybe your bands could use an adjusting too? Pretty easy to do. Pick up an inch-pound torque wrench at Harbor Freight for $20 or so. 1-2 band is inside the pan - back passenger side corner. 3-4 band is on the side of the transmission - front driver side above the TV cable.

My trans guy and I have talked about this issue. In a nutshell; He said that ATF+3, Dextron II,III, and Type F are all compatible as far as seals etc. are concerned. He said the fluids differ in how "abrasive" or "slippery" they are. In order from slipperiest to most abrasive they are Dex III, Dex II, ATF+3, Type F. This is why many people say Type F makes their trans shift harder, it has fine particles of friction material suspended in it. Dex II and ATF +3 are almost identical in abrasiveness.
So it stands to reason the Dex III you used is just a little too slippery.

Great thanks for the info! I did call another dealership and they confirmed that it IS supposed to be ATF+3 and not Dexron III. They said that the ATF+3 also has more anti-foaming agents in it than Dexron III. Guess I know what dealership I'll be going to call next time I need info.

Guess I'll be changing it out tonight. Thanks.

cLAYH, What did you get your bench seat for the rear out of, and how hard was it to put in there?

Well for one you're better off getting your info from online sources than ANY dealer.

Second make sure for proper tranny fluid level, you check the fluid level with trans warm, idling in NEUTRAL.

Drain a QT and add a QT of Lucas additive. That stuff is a tranny saver.

They were in the truck when I bought it. I think its out of a older Super Cab Ford cause it flips forward and down like the older Fords used to. I think there must have been a company in Southern Alberta that did these conversions cause I've seen a couple around Calgary now.
