a few questions......

hello, im new here, been around diesels for a good while, mostly working on everyone elses, well i finally got a cummins, FOR FREE (thanks dad), its a 90 D250 2wd non-intercooled automatic, i am having the pump rebuilt, 35.00$$ complete kit from www.dieselcare.com cause its leaking, 3200 GSK from piers diesel, what fuel pin do you suggest?? or just grind mine, im having the pump rebuilt for free at my college, its only costing me parts so i wont have much in the rebuild. im going to do the 3 inch crossover pipe, advance the pump timing some, i may skip the piston pump and just install a electric pump on the frame along with all new bigger fuel lines feeding the pump. can i just put a block off plate on it like you would normally do to a gas motor when switching to a electric fuel pump. how much can the stock turbo take before it gives up the ghost, im looking at the HTT stage IV housing. what will injectors run for the truck price wise, im not looking for nothing nasty but i would like something like 75 horse over stock or possibly bigger, i got a few hundred to play with now and will have more later. 5 inch exhaust and air filter system will be built by me, transmission upgrades will be a cooler and a shift kit, possibly a full manual reverse valve body in it eventually. is there anything else you guys would recommend that wont break the bank terribly. i would like to thank you guys for alot of the info in the sticky thread you have posted in the past, i havent found much stuff on the net for the rotary trucks but i have here, its time to play now.......................

Grind or Old Smoky, whichever fits your budget.

You can use a block off plate. Try to keep fuel pressure under 20 psi.

The stock injectors will provide more fuel than you can keep cool with an HTT kit. If you want injectors on a budget, POD's are the ones for you.

thanks i appreciate the information, from what i read, i figured stock injectors would feed enough fuel, what about a "stock" HX40, not a big custom race 40, just a stock, outta the box factory 40?? worth the money?? i got access to all kinds of used turbo's so i can probably get anything, just got to have them rebuilt up at college, who builds the POD in jectors?? i appreciate all the information, i really do, i am decent with p-pump trucks but i just havent messed with rotary trucks cause no one around here builds them.

Welcome. That couple o' hundred you talk about, kiss it goodbye because of this site and its "suggestions" Sounds like with those mods, you might need a VB and TC for the tranny.

Actually with the 727 transmission mods arent needed as soon as the 518 I dont think. Mine is holding up fine to pods, fuel pin, pump tuning, and has never offered to fail, overheat, or slip. I think if I wasnt going to the Getrag it would still hold ifne to the hx35.

Gonna be hard to spool. If you can find one with a small turbine housing it will be OK, but the '40 is fragile because it uses the same diameter shaft as the HX-35 but has bigger wheels on each end.

POD's are a Lucas injector.

A bunch of diesel?

They are good for about 350 RWHP with a cranked up pump.

the 727 is a great tranny in stock form, just figure i might as well do it before i have to worry about it. and for the simple fact i like shifting my own gears and that is cheaper than a 5 speed lol. i thought it was lucas that made the pod's, how much do they usually run??. i had heard that about the HX40 from a few people, ill probably just use the stock charger for now and upgrade later, is there any stock dodge chargers that are superior that i could use?? cause around here about the only thing a stock charger is used for are paperweights. 350 rwhp will be just fine, cause my buddies LBZ edit makes that at the crank, and all i want to say is mine makes more horse than his. cause it will **** him off his 42,000.00$$ truck cant beat my 19 year old free truck. the guy that is gonna be rebuilding my pump has been doing pumps for about 45 years so he knows 1 or 2 things about tweaking a VE. i want this truck to make as much power to the wheels as it can and still be reliable. thanks for all the help guys, this site has to have the nicest guys on it of any of the 4x4/truck/diesel/offroad websites im a member of.

p.s. what about running used motor oil through our trucks, filtered of course, and fryer oil, kerosene and stuff like that.
where is the cheapest place to get a lift pump for the truck, just need a cheap stock one cause it leaks, ill be using a electric pump after i get everything going probably.

I would steer clear of the used engine oil veggie oil etc, etc.

As for the VE hotrodding and rebuilding, it has only been pursued hard for the last 5-8 years. I remember when 250rwhp was about the max due to longevity concerns. Now we know otherwise. I'd say with your inejctors and lack of OD, go for about 150-170cc of fuel, 366 spring, and a HTT stage 4 kit. To reach 350RWHP, you are going to need an intercooler. A stock HX35 is a serious upgrade for your truck, since you will be coming from what they call a baby H1C (50mm impellar vs the 54mm impellar of the intercooled trucks)

The stock torque convertors can always be improved upon, though if yours satisfies you and can outrun your friend's D-max, it may move down the list.

The stock turbo is good for about 25-28psi without going into orbit. Head gasket on yours peaks at about 30psi. The later, marine gaskets are good to 45-50 psi boost.

actually ill be drag racing it at Kil-Kare in dayton and then at Lakeland Motorsports Park when i move to florida, so the trans upgrades are definately needed, the duramax remark was just taking a friendly poke at them. i was seriously thinking of going ahead and just finding an intercooler, would you recommend a stock one or one from a different year or make truck, or aftermarket one. if its sized right i can fabricate mounts for it along with the piping, has anyone ever got rid of the mechanical fan and went to electrics??? cause that would save space on the front of the motor and free up a few horses.

Intercoolers from 7.3 liter PowerStrokes are popular.
