Fan shroud and water temp.

Does anybody have a source for a new fan shroud?

Also what is the max sustained water temperature you should be running?

Went camping this weekend and pulling the hill up to Eisenhower tunnel at the divide I was running 3rd gear and 210deg water temp. I don't have a fan shroud right now because it broke in half and threw it away figuring I could get a new one fairly easily.

thanks, Aaron

210 sounds a little high, but I doubt you will hurt anything if it's just while pulling a hill.

From my experiences with all types of other vehicles, a fan shroud is one of the most important components of a cooling system. The fan is basically useless without one because it can not draw the velocity needed through the radiator/ac/tranny cooler/intercooler. Air flow will follow the path of least resistance and that means pulling hot underhood air from the side instead of through the coolers. I bet with a proper fan shroud your truck will run under 190-200 pulling that same hill.

How long did you sustain 210? I wouldn't want to see over 200. But 210 is ok for awhile. It's hot, but not overheating. 220 would definately be overheating.

3rd gear?? Couldn't get a running start up that monster?? How big of a camper?

For the rest of you, never throw away your broken fan shrouds. They can be plastic welded back together. Both fan shrouds on the 1st gens, one for the nonIC'd, one for the IC'd, are NLA from the dealer. No Longer Available. The only source is a junkyard.

I haven't looked closely at the Dodge one, but with rockcrawlers a lot of people just use sheet metal and bend up a new shroud. Should be able to rig one up with just a pair of snips, some sheet metal screws, and a few cuts on your hands.

Pulling a 28ft travel trailer weighing upwards of 7000lbs, and the hill isn't exactly a hill its a 7% grade going from 9000ft to above tree line so its a good 3-4mile "hill". And I had plenty of power in 4th gear but I had to keep letting out of it as my egt's kept climbing so I basically had to coast down slow enough to get to 3rd. I need more air!!!!

Yeah if it got over 210 I would have definately pulled over but thats the hottest its ever ran!! Pulling the same trailer on the flats it runs about 180. I definately need to find a shroud.
