External Regulator
ok guys, I read the sticky and now I am trying to hook up an external regulator to my alternator. I wired a 12v hot to the top terminal on the regulator and ran wires from the two outlets on the back of the alt to each terminal on the regulator.
My question is: Before I hooked up the regulator I checked the wires and when one terminal is hot on the Alt. the other one is as well. Won't this burn up the regulator??? What is the correct way to wire this thing? Also, with a jumper wire between the two terminals on the Alt. it still doesn't charge.
Please Help!

Hey Lee, isn't there a 91.5 wire harness diagram in the sticky? I've got a 93 manual, so it doesn't have that external regulator in the harness diagrams.
I've got a 91 harness, i could try to trace the wires from the alternator to the regulator and get back to you.

Hey Fred, I thought that when you wrecked your 93 that it smashed the PCM thing next to the battery??? Thats what I removed, I took that out and most of the wires that go with it. Everything works exept the ALT. Now all I need to find out is how to wire this regulator. I bought the one for an 89-91 truck.
In the sticky it says to only apply 12v to the top post on the regulator. Well I wired everything to spec and both wires in the plug are hot with the IGN. on. I just don't want to burn up my regulator.
Thanks again.
P.S. how is everything in AZ???

hey i hooked up a external reg on my chevycummins, real easy. Run your big wire from your alt to battery obviously. ground the oher one and i think you will be left with a green and a brown one. On your regulator there is 2 prongs, the top of the triangle is power (i dont think it matters what wire) i ran the brown i believe. Splice a bullet connector on the end of each wire but with the top triangle bullet connector connect another wire with it that goes to the pos on the battery. keep the alt power and the regulator wire seperate as you dont want the reg getting mixed signals. measure with a voltmeter and your golden.
Thanks guys, got it working no prob now! The sticky was right, and I had it wired right the whole time, I was just second guessing myself!
Thanks again!
Oh and what a diff. headlight relays make, WOW!

Yeah I wired mine on the side of the road outside of Silverton CO. My light switch was overheating and shorting out.....it seemed to know when I was taking a corner, just as I would get into it ......NO LIGHTS

.....that road from Durango to Silverton is tough in the daytime much less at night with flickering headlights......
Those relays saved the day...
