exhaust brake 93 CTD auto 518???

I am wanting to install an exhaust brake on my 93 CTD with a 518 automatic transmission? My truck is actually a 48 Ford COE car hauler, but the body is on the chassis/engine from a 93 Dodge 1 ton dually. As I said, it is now a car hauler and I would feel much more comfortable with a little extra braking power with my car loaded on top of it. The exhaust has been adapted to 4" just after the turbo, and the transmission overdrive is being controlled with a switch mounted on the gear shift(this was done because the truck originally had a 5 speed manual, but since I moved the engine behind the cab, I had to use an automatic because I could not shift the manual transmission back there. Of course then the computer did not have the circuitry in it to control the overdrive, therfore the reason for the switch on the shifter). Anyway, I see lots of posts on here about exhaust brakes, but they all seem to be posts on newer trucks. Can it be done without any real problems? Can any in-line e-brake for 4" exhaust be used? I'm obviously not concerned about warranty, as it is a 93 model engine.Anyone have any opinions?? Thanks guys!!!!

Scott

Unless your have a lockup torque converter that you can lockup and keep it locked as you downshift then I'd say go for it.

Being you have an A518 an exhaust brake will be next to useless. The only thing your likely to accomplish is generating alot of heat in the tranny when using an exhaust brake.

What he said. It won't do much more than make noise. Waste of money unless you put in a lockup trans like a 47RH as well.

Thanks for the valueable information. The expertise I have gotten here on this site has kept me from wasting good money. This is a perfect example. I almost had ordered a new exhaust brake for nothing. ..............What years was the 47RE transmission used? I am not past putting another transmission in to get what I am looking for.

Thanks

What is required to put a 47RH in place of a 518? I have a 518 in a 93 W350, and I'm looking to replace it with something that will allow me to use exhaust braking. Does it just bolt in, or do I need converter plates, and how would I control the lockup (switch?)?

Also, any comments regarding DTS transmissions? I'm contemplating putting in one of their rebuilds and torque converters, since mine has 170K on it and is starting to be kind of inefficient...
