Eratic idle rpm. plus two other????

Had to go into the injector pump on my 93 Ram-350 last year. Had a leaker. Bought a couple of seal kits off Ebay. One for a spare. Bosch kits $24.00 +-ea.While I was in there installed 3400rpm gov.spring, turned the fuel pin, redid idle adjustment screw. Got educated off this site. Never had been into a injector pump. Also bought a Denny T pin, but have not installed it. I have the 16cm turbo housing and Prince of Darkness injectors. I can lay down alot of black smoke and peg my boost gage over 35 lbs.Lot more then the stock 16 pounds when I bought the truck new in 93. Here's my problem and I hope it is a minor fix. All of a sudden last week when I am in gear at a light , my idle drops off to around 550- 600rpm. I can put it in nuetral and it stays low. All I have to do in nuetral is to tap the pedal to raise the idle to 800 and it will stay there till I put it in gear. It will take a bit, but it then falls down to the low idle.
One other quirk I have noticed, this truck always started right up on the first hit of the key.Not even 1 revolution. It still does when it's cold. If I stop and let it sit awhile, I'll go to start it and it will crank over longer before it fires, like there is no fuel right there to fire up.Anybody have any ideas???
LAST OF ALL, my fuel gauge just started acting crazy. Have 3/4 of a tank. Take off and the gage goes down then up and down from1/4 to 3/4. When I get where Iam going and sitting still it will go up to the proper3/4. My thoughts are the sending unit in the tank!! Thanks

Sounds like your lift pump is going bad. Time to upgrade to a low pressure piston pump. Check the sticky for install info and Part numbers and such. Nice upgrade for sure. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...2.html?t=93722

I hope to god you have an EGT gauge with the probe mounted PRE turbo, Have you noticed a difference in EGT's ?

Have you noticed differance in smoke?
How long does it have to sit and heat soak until it has a longer crank to fire?
Yes that sounds like the level sensor has gone bad, 80ish$ at the dealer.

Yeah, got a gauge, it bumps it up there, but my probe is in my exhaust elbow. I limit the darkness to short bursts and the temp will raise and quickly fall. I have been tempted to try pulling the truck, as I am into Garden tractor Pulling, but it's my tow vehicle. Thanks for the hint on the lift pump. I may just go the electric fuel pump route. I have always had it in my head to install one as a backup. Thanks

No difference in smoke. Have always had some hazing at idle since the mods, even with the diaphram sping all the way lean. It takes oh maybe 15 minutes before I experience the longer start up. What botheres me the most is that I always laugh when there is a Ford Powerstroke next to me at the pump, and he gets ready to go and sits there and cranks away while I have instant fire.
Seems like all this **** comes all at once when I am trying to get ready to take a trip.If it is the tank sending unit, I know the bed will have a new access hole in it. I will be neat about it. I aint about to drop the tank. Just topped it off for the trip. Thanks

Well you may want to look into "rocking" the bed. As where you would remove all of the drivers bed bolts, filler neck, and lighting harnesses, then loosen the passenger side bed bolts then push the bed up with a jack stand or two to hold it up while you are working on your bed.

A new lift pump may be order for you. I'm not compleatly convinced on that though...sorry to say. If it were bleeding down then it would do it all of the time, not just heat soak. May want to think about the old cold water on the high pressure pump when it heat soaks and see if it fires right off.
I will assume you do not have a fuel pressure gauge? May want to through one on there while upgrading your fuel system. Also since you will have the sending unit out and doing an electric supply pump, may want to look into doing the whole supply system in 3/8".
Good Luck

Thank you for the input. What kind of pressure am I looking for out of the lift pump, and how much GPMs so I can look up some electric pumps. I guess I need to take care of that issue first. As I mentioned, trying to get ready for a trip up to TN. Can even take care of the sending unit later. Thanks

You want to be as close to 15psi at the high pressure pump as possible (I've recently gotten some new pressure information to try out, but I'll need to test it before I'm confident to say it will work with out blowing the front seal out). Lots of guys are running the holley black pump, some others are running the carter 4601hp, and few are running the A1000, Fass, Air Dog, walbro. They can go from 150ish to 800ish in price. Gpm I think anything over 100gpm free flow will be an improvement over what you got now. A Pee Pump mechanical lift pump will also get you lots of pressure, so a regualtor will be in order. Also putting in a remote filter would be an good Idea in my opinion and getting rid of the stock filter and line set up.
Honestly it all depends on how much money you are wanting to spend. All have their atributes and their down falls. A search of each listed will let you know.
Good Luck

Thanks so much. Yeah, I am retired and on a tight budget. Looks like getting the pump right now and when I get back to take care of filter and bigger lines. Just chaged the stock filter, as all this started after I fueled up. Thought I might had gotten some bad fuel with some water. No indication of that. I guess after miles of use ,(213K) things tend to be replaced. Thanks again Flatbed.
