Engine stand
I got the photos to work.
I was gonna suggest that type of stand. They are heavy but are made for these heavy diesel engines.
I have used an engine stand that I had the Cummins hanging off the bell housing adapter plate. The adapter plate was 3/8" plate(not arms) and the rest of the stand was overbuilt. I wouldn't suggest that way. Wannadiesel has the right idea with hanging it off the side(as is shown in the pics).
If you goto OTC and look for "Motor Rotor" (page 267) it is what is shown in the pics. Rated at 2000 lbs and hangs the engine sideways.

I work on big diesels all the time and the best way is to stand them on end sitting on the bell housing after you get the crank in. You can rotate it back to normal after you get the bottom end together and support it on blocks while assembling the top end if you don't like working sideways.
