Engine block, repair or replace?

I recently bought an engine, with "110,000" on it. I have found something I'm not entirely comfortable with. On the #6 main, where the piston squirter is, the block is cracked right there. It starts and ends at the hole where the squirter is. It really can't go any farther but a crack is a crack, right? Also this engine is going to need to be sleeved on #5 as water got in the cylinder and caused some damage. Should I just look for another block and put all the guts from this engine in it? I know a picture would help but I don't have a digital. I thought I got a good deal up till now.[dummy]

That sucks. I've seen a good deal of these early motors going on ebay for pretty cheap. I'd guess it'd be easier to start with a good, clean block. Even if a machine shop can fix it up, it may cost more (not to mention there is no price to having peace of mind)!

Well, depending on the depth and size of the crack, it can be welded. Ive never been inside of one of these motors so I cant offer too much input on weather or not it is a BIG deal or one that can be repaired and life moves on. But I would take the block to a reputable engine rebuilder/machinist and ask them for their opinion. Thats usually the best way to go.

I know its a pain in the butt, but I would go with a new block and not ever have to worry about it any more.

dont go away Buckwill. there are spelling "nazis" on every board. if one cant read or understand what you typed they need to go back to school or just stay away themselves.[coffee]

It's not the 53 block. It is a 91.5 model engine. I will take it to the machine shop and see if he can save it. Otherwise, I will be looking for a donor block. I only gave $750 for everything so if the IP is good and the head is useable I didn't get ripped too bad.

Hey Buckwill, the last thing we need is a knowledgeable member like yourself to leave the boards. I hope you stick around

I have seen block's crack there before. Where the oil piston cooling nozzel is? I have would have it welded it's no big thing. As for sleeving, I would bore the hole unless, it has pin holes. #6 hole is bad about pin holes, Bore no more than 40 over. Sleeves are the best fix they do cost a bit more.

Buckwill, I'm sure had he known, he'd have held back better. You won't find too many hard feelings here, stick around.
