Eccentric Cone Spring
I was reading Montys article on Old Smokys power pin and saw he tested it with different eccentric cone springs. With the spring from the newer pump you get full fueling quicker at lower boost than the spring from the older pump. I'm wondering if it is worth it for me to get a new spring that is not as stiff as the one in my pump? If I was to get a new one would the spring be the same for all years now? I am either going to get an Old Smoky pin or PDR pin not sure yet which one.

I pulled the spring out and put it in the glove box and as long as I dont mash the pedal i see very little smoke but the guy on my right is in for a big smokin if i jump on the gas(diesel) the spring just keeps the the fuel supply in check till the turbo has spooled up enough psi to push it down and it gets on it fast with full fuel from idle

Hey rebal where abouts in Cali do you live? There is a dyno day in Rohnert Park next Saturday if you are in the area. I have both springs and I would think you would have to be on a dyno to see any changes. I sure didnt feel any differences.

That'd be interesting to see Paul. I talked to a couple guys about the power pins available. One guy I ran into in Martin, said he saw an early 1st gen see a respectable power increase on a Dyno run. Admittedly not as big an increase as the later trucks see.

Now about this running without a spring. I still run mine with a spring and I have put down some respectible numbers. I try to keep mine from smoking from a stand still, but it will still leave a nice cloud. I have my afc almost all the way to the top. I might try some different things when I get on the rollers just to see whats what.

hey stomp we are talkin about the spring under the afc ? i just put a posi rear in the old girl to keep the wheels from spinning and the big reason i like her smokin is to get the kid in the fart can to roll his windows up cuz the rap of the diesel just sounds so much better then the rap coming from them

You can "compensate" for the issue you're talking about by simply running your starwheel pretty much right down to the bottom.
Under ordinary circumstances the spring will compress fully if you do that. The "response time" will improve noticably as well so no need to spend the $$ bud.....

edit: I should clarify the "response time" remark.... actually the afc cone movement is related to boost pressure...you can set the starwheel so the you'll have afc fueling onset with as little as 4 or 5 psi boost or as much as 18-20psi (my truck) so you'll have lots of room for tweaking.

I agree with bushy, you dont need to change the spring, just adjust the star wheel, down for quicker fueling and up for slowing it down.
The old smokey power pin has claimed 28 HP to the tire improvement. When I installed mine I could feel the power increase and gained between 2 and 3 PSI boost. I would advise keeping the spring in, I can blacken the hiway behind me even with the spring in and not adjusted to the bottom.
My tail pipe aims toward the rear, and did I happen to mention I smoked a guy recently worse than I have ever smoked anyone before, Yes he was a tail gater, I gave him some smoke, than I got the highbeams
Then he got so much smoke I almost couldnot see his highbeams any more. needless to say he backed off and turned his highbeams down
