If the elbow is truly cast then you wont be able to weld it worth a crap.

#2, pull the exhaust housing off and inspect the turbine for damage.
I've picked up HE351cws that were tight and pretty, that looked like there wasn't a thing wrong, then pulled the exhaust housing off and found the turbine looks like this:

A few minutes now beats the hell out of putting it on and pulling your hair out trying to figure why the heck it won't spool worth a darn.

That's a very nice unit, by the pics.
I made my own pliers to work on them.
Junk Harbor Freight needle nose pliers of various sizes and angles, with careful grinder work, make excellent snap ring pliers for these turbos.

tons of white smoke, oil entering the exhaust housing i think. does that mean the center section of the turbo is toasted too?

Everything is put back together and running smooth.

With the 18cm H1c I was making 32-33psi

Now with the 351 and ps/IC I am making about 25-27psi which I think is about right. I am surprised that my WOT temp 1250 is only about 50 degrees cooler with the old set up. The small housing really lets the temp climb during a long pull. The old set up would swing the needle to 1300 ish right away, but it wouldn't climb during the pull.

Now I really need to start looking for injectors, with everything I've done it seems silly to still have the stock units in there. I'm thinking 5x14 should work nicely.

Tighten up the wastegate, 35psi will be much better.

I wouldn't go bigger than 5x12's personally.

Do you have full 4" exhaust?

Stock inj. are enough, i run 40 psi with mine and i still have room to turn up the pump a little.

Yes I have full 4" from turbo to tip.

I'm not sure the wastegate is opening, I think I just don't have enough fuel.

Why do you sugget 5x12 maximum? I guess my 518 will live longer with them than 5x14's

Is your pump turned up at all?

If i recall correctly with a stock pump i had ~29psi with the 351, turning in the fuel screw got me to 40.

Depends on your tolerance of smoke and what you plan to do with the truck. Most people find 5x12's are a good match for the 351 when towing. I have a set of 5x14's but only went that big because i have compounds going in this winter and i tow mostly and don't like smoke.

Easy to check your wastegate, just wire it shut temporarily and take it for a run.

Wow that's a totally different set of numbers. I've squeezed every horse out of my pump already. The wastegate MUST be opening. I've got some of the wire we tie rebar with at work I think that shouldn't stretch. I'll post back later with results.

My hp goal for the truck is to stay competitive with my buddies 7.3, he's running big injectors, fancy auto, meth, factory turbo, and some big tunes. But his rig never weighs less than 10k lbs so with the weight diff I stand a chance with my 351 and bigger sticks. I'm thinking 350-400hp with some tranny work.
