trans swap
i did the 4500 change out, i had the 5th gear nut drop out in 15k miles, they said bring it in (to vegas) further examination revealed the main shaft was not upgraded, they said they had another alternative using a clamp locknut with sectioned thread vises that pressure lock the nut, another 5k miles, no 5th gear, i finally got them to send the 350 buck mainshaft and did the upgrade myself, and to my satisfaction, ive gotter 40k miles of good operation, these rebuilds come from michigan, you can remove the rear cover to reveal the 5th gear nut on the main shaft, the upgrade shaft has a keyway cut in to allow a folding lock washer over the nut, you want to know you have what you pay for, mine is a 4x4 upgrade, and for the price, you save a lot of time, the bellhousing saves using the original clutch, a little floor modification is necessary, with the extra time, now ive got a 4500 mated to the 205 t-case, with a gear vendors hanging off the back, giving me 7 forward towing-5 driving gears. was it worth it? the 4500 is the best trans for the cummins, its easier to work on tearing it down, than any other trans ive seen, (many) the six speeds have had some issues, the 5 speeds seem to be tolerable of any amount of power you give them, if you like the manual like i do, after the getrag, youll love it! kudos, joe.
