Don't buy wire from Fry's

I just got back from Fry's Electronics in Fountain Valley, CA. I bought a 500W Amplifier Installation Kit That supposedly had 17' of 8 Gauge stranded wire among other things. The 8 Gauge wire was what I needed and I figured that the other stuff would make it worth the $20.00 I paid for the kit. Well the 8 Gauge wire turned out to be 12 gauge. In another section of the store they were trying to sell 12 gauge solid wire as 10 Gauge, you know, house wire, or an inflated price.

So now I have to go find a decent supplier of wire/cable that actually has true sizes.

Anybody know where in Orange County? I tried Home Depot but their stuff is house wiring which is like 9 strand and not good for Auto wiring. O'Reilly's biggest is 10 Gauge if the have it in stock.

Bummed in the O.C.

Edwin

Expensive, but high quality and great to work with.

https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/unshieldlwire.php

You could probably even go there and pick it up.

Yeah that is the same thing I found when I bought that headlight relay kit from an offshore supplier, wire appeared to 10-12gauge, but they were all wire casing with maybe 18gauge worth of wire inside. I tossed it out and just used the connectors and fitting and wired o a system up per Jim's instructions.

I used marine wire on my headlight relay harness. I bought it by the foot in the colors and gauge I wanted. The wire is really nice with more smaller individual wires per diameter than the automotive stuff.
I rarely buy anything truck related in a kit anymore.Maybe it's me but i was always pitching half the parts from the kit and re designing the rest!

Look for a truck/ auto electric shop.

This should be somewhat near you.
Custom Wires & Cables, Hook Up, Automotive & Multi-Conductor Wires | Anaheim Wire Products

Marine wire is also an option,
try West Marine.

Thanks Jim:

That West Marine is very close to me. In fact I was almost there on Saturday when I went to Hoag.

They also stay open till 8:00 pm which means I can avoid the worst of the traffic.

It's just up the street from Hoag,
Have you guys gone to Balboa Island yet?
I took my truck across on the ferry, thought it was going to sink it.

Years ago I went across on the ferry many times. Both walking and with my little S-10 Blazer. There's a webcam on the weather underground site which is of the dock on one end of the ferry. I used to have a girlfriend who had a house on the beach.

Anchor is really good wire. Napa seem to vary from one location to another.

Everything works OK but I'd feel better if I used the bigger wire. #10 is marginal at 30 amps but I just got this set of real nice crimpers and large wire terminals and I need something to do while the doctors figure out how to fix my heart.

#4 wire is about the minimum I would use for Jumper Cables. But try to find them.
