Do I need a Shop Press?
Hey all, looking for something to pop the bearings out of my hub. The lady also needs her wheel bearings done as well on her Chrysler. Should I buy a shop press or is there a better way?
I'm use to the whole hammer it out or use my ball press.

For a hub, hammer and brass drift works best imo.
A shop press works well for diff/pinion gears.
I have a 12t press in my shop, have only used it once for my friends snowmobile. I am sure it will come in handy one day though!

Don't know what truck you have or year model...my '03 doesn't have front bearings that are serviceable. You have to replace the whole hub. Better look into it and make sure.

I've used it several dozen times since then. I like having one around, you know like the ball and chain attached to my leg (aka wife). Wouldn't be the same without it..... as I'd be having a lot more fun, I'm sure

They come in handy for off the wall stuff. Depending on what you do for a living you could write it off on taxes also. If you have the money to spare I would buy it. But as I'm sure you know you don't really need it to do what you want to so. Now since you said your wife then you can blame it on her. I tell mine all the time about how much I had to spend to get her that free snap on tee shirt. She has enough snap on apparel to fill a rack in her closet. And its all her fault.......or so I tell her.

theres kits that include aluminum blocks for all the popular race sizes, for around 40. that make removal and install very easy, when installing new races, i freeze the race and heat the hub, they just fall into place, with minimal contact.

a buddy showed me a trick to remove stubborn races.....took my mig welder and welded a bead on bearing race center around the race, when bead cooled and stressed- it shrunk the race and it fell right out. wildest thing i have seen yet for bearing race removal......of course the bearing race was about 7 inches across and 2 1/2'' wide but it should do for all races.
