Difficult to start after sitting 5 days?
 

I'm sure this question has been answered previously; if someone could point me to an old thread I would greatly appreciate it.

My father bought this truck new and it has always fired up in less than a second. Recently, when the truck sits unused for a few days, I have trouble getting it started. Once started in the morning, it'll again fire up in half a second the rest of the day.

I'm guessing it's something related to either the lift pump or the injection pump?

You are right about it possibly being the lift pump failing. It may be letting some air in the system. A good place to start...Mark

I would also double check all the fuel line maybe you have 1 sucking Air ?

My injection pump started to leak on one of my Cummins crews. Then it would let air in if it sat for a day or more, and I would have to bleed the injector and lines to get it to start.
It would continue to start great as long as it didn't sit longer than a day after that.

I have a VE re-seal in my future...

As stated by the others...it is more then likely a bad seal somewhere in the system allowing the fuel to bleed back out of the lines. Look for wet nuts on top of the injectors...this is usually fuel leaking out, and if fuel is leaking out, air can be leaking in.

When I had my truck in the shop at Cummins Power South to kill the KDP, I had them also repair a leak on the IP (that they were able to fix without removing the IP). My fuel mileage improved immediately (from roughly 16 mpg to 20 mpg). Unfortunately, fuel mileage has now slipped back to about 16 mpg, indicating it may be time for a complete rebuild on the IP :(. That's more scope that I care to tackly myself; fortunately there is a Bosch-certified shop near me that will rebuild VE pumps for cheaper than will Cummins.
