Dash light behind headlight switch panel?
 

Is there suppose to be an interior dash light behind the headlight / electric mirror switch panel in the dash? On my truck there appears to be a stamped piece of metal with a about a 1/2" hole in it like there is suppose to be a lamp receptical in it. I checked 3 trucks in the wrecking yards - I didn't find any in them but all the dashes were already torn apart.

I also found a black/yellow wire hanging under that dash in that location. But on atleast one of the wrecking yard trucks, that wire was stuck in the door jamb loom? Any idea what this wire is for? it had a female barrel connector on it.

the black/yellow wire I believe is for the dome light switch in the door. I know what you are talking about in that bracket near the HL switch. I have never seen anything on it.

Correct on the blk/ylw wire... and i have never seen anythign in that hole either. It may be that they design taht piece for more than application adn we dont need that hole for ours.

That Black/yellow wire is unpluged on my truck and the door jamb / dome light switch still works....??????

Do some models of trucks have a courtesy light in the door, or something like that? or how about a kick panel light?

I haven't tested the wire with an multimeter yet, but it looks like I probably should.

I think that wire may be for the door-open buzzer. I cut mine in my truck to get the stupid thing to stop.

Well I tested that black/yellow wire and its ONLY hot when the parking lights/headlights are turned on.... Also it doesn't vary in voltage based on teh position of the dimmer switch. So now I'm wondering if its the factory wire that is for the running lights on top of the cab? My truck has running lights but it appears a previous owner installed them since they are spiced into my headlight light switch and they vary in brightness with the dimmer switch.... Can anyone confirm that on a Factory installation?

wait a min.. you can dim your cab lights by dimming your dash lights.. that is awesome :)

Not really.... my dash cluster lights are now REALLY dim and I want them brighter. I just got done taking the dash cluster out and cleaning all the bulbs, those little blue lamp caps and the clear plastic trying to make them brighter and no luck.

Not to mention someone in the past hacked out the headlight switch plug and rewired it with another plug with different a couple different wire colors! What a mess! Oh and did I meantion my taillights don't work.... I hate the jerry rigging previous owners do! Guess thats what I get for buying a "farm/construction" truck.

Rick , i just rewired the tail lights on my 93, installing new lamp sockets and here is the color code for teh tail light wiring on a 93...
the black/red stripe= parking lamp( dimmer of the two filaments)
black/yellow stripe=turn and stop
violet=reverse lights
solid black=ground

I think it would be the same on a 92. I peeked at a Chiltons at the local parts store, it had all the wiring diagrams in it, costs like $16.... I would suggest picking one up. If yo need to, i can take a pic of my headlight switch wiring. At some time in teh past, they cut the connector off it, and now I have individual spade connectors on each wire pllugged into the switch assy.
Would make it easy to see what goes where probably.
Let me know if you need it, might take me a day or two to get it done.

It is common for the termilals at the light switch to melt on these trucks. They are not up to the task of handling extra trailer lights.

If you pull a trailer... and I know you will since I know you from POR... wire relays into your trailer lights circuit to take the load off your headlight switch. There are write-ups on the board about it but I am sure you can figure it out.

BTW, there is no light near the headlight switch on my 93 LE.

Also put your headlights on relays and get a nice night time light boost. The stock wiring is pretty puny.

Relays is definately the future plan. Right now I'm still trying to fix all the little crap the Previous owners of this truck didn't fix or hacked together. I'm just trying to get everything back to stock. Its much easier to retrofit and trouble shoot stuff later on!

BTW on Electircal Sheet "AD21" (http://dens-site.net/Dodge_CTD/1991....ams/Scan24.jpg) It says the Black/Yellow wire from the headlight switch is for the "Roof Clearance and Identification Lamp Provision".

Fix those cab lights ASAP, that's a lot of extra load on the dimmer.

Oh - I am, thats just one of my projects I have planned for tonight. I just wish I could get the truck into my garage (its about 3 feet too long) and I'm getting tired of working on it with it being 30-35 degrees outside!

Just pull the nose/rear in, and close the door on the bed, and kick on a propane heater, Just did a head gasket in this style, High of 40* out, and the heater on lowest possible setting, plenty warm for us! Almost too warm!
