Replacing the spindle bearings have the old ones out been looking for rebuild info on this subject particular the depth setting on putting the new ones back in. Any suggestions?

There is a ridge where the race sit's once you pull the old 1's out you will see it just use a brass punch to put them back in

Thanks I see the ridge but did read a couple vague articles that said to keep a check on the depth measurement. So all that has to be done is press them in til they bottom out is that correct ?

I would put them in just beyond the depth of the spindle seal, NOT until they bottom. I would also warm the spindle and freeze the bearing before installing. A bearing race driver set or a proper sized socket would be my tool of choice instead of a drift- you want the force spread evenly.

Unless you want ruined bearings or spindle, make sure the races are bottomed, otherwise they will slide to the stop while you are driving down the road............

So press it all the way to the ridge inside the spindle?

I have 2 OEM spindles here- one off a 92 dana 60 and another off my 93 dana 60. Depth of engagement on the 92 is 0.160 inches (which is not enough) and the 93 is 0.214 inches, which looks to be ideal.
Please drive yours to the stop and then measure it and post the measurement.

I'll sure do it give a few days sandblasting and painting everything.

Yes, looking at a Tapered roller bearing, the forces must be transferred somewhere, if the race cannot transfer the forces to the ledge, then it will move. That isn't a good thing when you are trying to drive.......

Thanks for the info i'll try and post some pics as i complete this little project. One other question does Timkin make a replacement bearing for this? I have seen Spicer replacements which one would be better? Some people say use only Spicer U-joints wondering if the same applies here?

I am a little confused. Are you talking about this bearing. If so I don't think that it is tapered or that it has a race separate from the bearing, if not, nevermind...Mark

Yes that is exactly the one i'm talkin about and no its not tapered and doesn't have a separate race mine is all made together. Inside the spindle there is a ridge that's what I was trying to clarify if you are supposed to press the bearing down to or if there was a depth measurement. Above was said to press it all the way to the ridge otherwise it will move to that point while driving.

That is what I thought. The one in the pic is the original in my rig, with 300k+ miles. It appears to be pushed all the way to the shoulder...Mark
