D60 help

Wondering if i messed something up when i was putting the funny hub on... followed BC's sticky but also changed races and bearings. Now when i tighten the nut it bottoms out and the hub still has about 1/4"-1/2" play. Checked the wheel seal to see if i possibly might have pushed that farther in than flush when installing the hub. At a loss right now

You may want to go back and recheck/compare all the bearings and races you replaced. Something is off.

The bearing backset is fixed in the hubs. The only way you could alter the positioning of the bearings is if they are the wrong bearings or races, or they're not fully seated correctly.

Did you compare the bearings and races before installing? I've bought them at the local parts store, only to get home, disassemble the hubs, to find that the parts given were incorrect.

Took pics of all the old bearing numbers and ordered those same bearings and races. Just to make sure 387A is the front inner bearing, correct?

To be completely honest, I can't remember the part numbers. Sounds familiar, but not sure. Are you positive the races are fully seated ? Are you using the proper technique for torquing them, backing off the nut, installing the washer, then torquing the outer nut ?

For me,

When I bought my truck, the day I parked it in my driveway for the first time, the rear wheel was leaking gear oil. I'm lucky the hour drive home didn't blow up the rear axle.

Anyway, I took the axles out, pulled the hubs, and looked things over. I brought the parts to the local parts store, and bought new version of the same parts. Put the truck back together, and almost immediately the seal failed, and I was taking it back apart again.

It turns out, that through the process of going through the parts manuals, that someone had installed the wrong bearings and races. Even though they worked, they were off by a few thousands of an inch, which gave them enough wiggle room to wipe out the seal, which was also the wrong part number. The driver side had all the correct part numbers, yet the passenger side was all mixed up. I bought all new of the same part numbers from the driver side (which is what the parts catalog said it was) and replaced the passenger side, never to have an issue again.

I've just got the inner nut on but I've ran out of threads so I'm gonna take the front hub off and look at the bearings again. And yes the races are fully seated. I might make up the other huh and try that hub on the same side as the loose hub, to see if both hubs are loose on the spindle

The inner bearing is caught on the spindle , and isn't allowing the hub to slide all the way back. I've had this happen before. Pull the hub and rotor assembly off, and check the spindle for any burrs, which would prevent the inner bearing from sliding on the spindle, all the way back.

Sometimes the hub needs to be wiggled on to get the inner bearing on properly.
