Custom Dash Pod - project
Thanks everybody!
As for the shaping, the pod is made out of 1/8" aluminum. All the edges were put together corner to corner leaving a nice gap to fill in. I then took a 100 grit flap wheel on a 4" grinder and knocked down the welds. Then DA in stages 80, 180, 320. The trick is to lock the DA so it spins and then shape that way for the most part. Takes some practice to make even edges.
All the pieces had the correct shape and any places where it was butt together were beveled then welded so I could finish it without if falling apart.
Posterboard is excellent for making templates for wierd side peices and curves. As seen on TV lol
For the coloring...We were talking about the line-x today. Then a guy at work said he can epoxy prime it and get a splatter like texture that I could knock down a bit with the DA. Wondering if I can still get dash color from Dodge..or maybe the local paint supply house. Also talked about getting it wrapped in something.
Think I should make it tan to match the interior and then make a thin face and woodgrain it to match the dash? Or just tan?

I thought that it was tig welded stainless. Aluminum is cool too and much easier to work with.

I don't mind the coped parts too much. Stainless on off hours would be torturing myself at this point

I vote against the wood-grain . . . Indeed, I think it is a shame to cover up all of that fab-work at all. If you were going to paint it, you could have just done it in resin . . .
As for the diff cover, I think the side is better for the fill -- more protected.
Very jealous of your work. It looks really good.

Well..it's painted and installed in the truck. I didn't take shots of the Unibit going through the dash to prevent anyone getting sick
I also took another 3/8" off the bottom to make it lower.
Going with all mechanical gauges in there was a PITA. I had to bend the tubes coming out of back of the trans and water temp just to get them to fit in the pod. So much for the dimensions I used from the site.
The tee and fittings I used for the tranmission sensor is leaking.
I used a fitting that had a flared piece that went into the end of the tubing. No flaring. I think I need to redo that. I telflon taped everything when I put it together. It's a seeping leak..but a leak.

It looked like my thermostat was stuck open on the way home. Both the stock sender and the guage were reading like it was open all the way and no cycling. Ran very cool.
My max boost is in 2nd gear and it's only 14#. That was mashing it up a bridge. Kinda disappointed with that. Never saw the ET go over 1000F. Probe is in the manifold. No cruise boost at 50 mph. The intercooler and boots have been checked previously. I do know the o-ring for the turbo is smooshed in one part. I guess I need to get a new one. I also replaced the ex. manifold/housing steel gasket.

Looks nice!
I hope you're tall.
14 psi is pretty normal for a stock intercooled truck. 12 - 16 is pretty much the normal range. You shouldn't have boost on flat ground at 50 with the stock turbine housing. Even with the 12 cm I have around 3 psi. All you need is a smaller turbine housing and more fuel, 1000 degrees is nothing.

Cool on the specs. It's definately getting turned up once the leak is fixed and I change out that t-stat.
As for the height, It's really not that bad sitting in the seat. It's a little in your face at first
, but i'm getting used to it. <must keep eyes on road...must keep eyes on road>
Jim...Yup! < points to left of this post > Cape Coral
