The vin is the best way. Pop out the glove box and see where the abs module and heater motor resistor is installed. If the resistor is in the cowl that's 93 style, in the hvac box is 85 style. Front Door panels changed in 87 up to and including 93.
If it's a manual trans see if the bulkhead has been moved over 3/4". Auto trans see if the clutch hydro hole is in the firewall and bracket holes are on the column support

Good info, thanks! I have some cell pics of the interior but the quality isn't the best. I could tell that the front doors are power windows and the back doors are manual which of course doesn't jive.

My first project
Found a NI CTD 5.9. A518 4x4 w/ NP205 to drop in. Starts this spring, or when I get it all together. Lot of parts, especially when you don't know what you're doing.

It has a '78 grille in it.
That is a one year only grille style that came with the orange marker lights.

Yes the '77 has clear markers with orange bulbs. The '78 has orange markers with clear bulbs. The '78 grille is my favorite. I think it is something about the way the rectangular orange marker lights in the grille look on the orange '78's I have had.

I learned to drive in a 1978 Dodge short box my dad order with a 360 and heavy rear springs. Been trying to find a pick. My boy wanted to build a truck and I found this. 17,000 miles and the build sheets were in the rear seat springs. Thanks. Love that 78 grille and trying to keep it looking like this.

Good point KRB.
I know my friend's sweet '76 Crew cab has the suicide rear tank behind the seat.
The Govt. bought most of those crew cab. I have seen lots of mismatched year parts on the old Govt. crews.
I have a '73 crew cab that has a strange manual '60 steering box and a drum braked, manual hub'ed, closed knuckle Dana 70 front axle.
I think on the govt. trucks, Dodge really just threw whatever leftover parts where around to fill the order.
All I know is that is a '78 grille and turn signal set up...the rest could be a mix up of '70's parts.

Very true about the government trucks.
I have an old navy crew, '76 with the tank under the bed. Who knows how it came from the factory...
And my '76 M880 is actually a '77 and it is registered as a '76 sedan...

The nomenclature on tag says it has a Dana 44 in front. Mine has Dana 60. It was a true govt contract truck but not m880. It is very confusing because there are other little things that don't add up. The truck is very solid but needs TLC. I excited to get started now that wrestling season is over.
