Are crack blocks an issue?

i work at the local freightliner dealership in town and have seen a few 5.9 mechanical with p pumps come in requiring drop ins due to cracked blocks.

i am curious if this is an issue with 5.9 with rotary pump in dodges or even the p pump mechanicals.

if not common with dodge trucks i would assume this common problem is due to the larger application of the FL80 business class trucks. the few i have seen have all been well maintained city trucks, but tandem axle dump box trucks, with mid frame mounted plow blades.

I know some of the later trucks had problems with the "53" block. Not really sure much about it. Wannadiesel said shes only seen a few of em on the first gens but that its not common. Im curious about this too as I am trying to buy two core engines to make into one good one. a solid first gen non ic block and a blown up 2nd gen block with a good head and all the trimings for the p pump

Faith

I had a couple members send me the links to a previous post regarding your coming out............I missed the original post and I was trying to be funny because I thought it was a misprint.

I apologize if I came across as offensive. I wish you well in your journey and will continue to look forward to your sage advice.

Sorry, we got a little off topic. It's not common for 1st gens, there was a rash of bad blocks in the late '90's that had "53" cast into them and that's probably what you've been seeing.

Could be, I've not heard them referred to that way.

my 91 blocked cracked in the same place the 53 blocks crack. I've done alot of asking around locally and no one has seen that happen on the first gens. Just a freak accident i guess.

I have heard that the 53 blocks cracked because they were made with a different type of metal, in brazil or something. The places they crack must be common, but it's not common for a non-53 5.9 to crack. Does that make any sense? Is this the case?

Where are these cracks showing up on these "53" blocks you guys are talking about? I have seen 3 early p pump motors with cracks in them.

I take it you mean they need sleeved?

No these were city trucks and they don't mess around. Every time they just go for a complete recon drop in. It is easier in many cases for them this way, mostly in the warranty department.

Busjoe- i believe the places they were cracking in my shop were around #5 cylinder. mostly noticeable after dropping the pan and looking on the inside. in all cases it was because we were finding coolant in the basement (oil)
