Couldn't Stand the Pressure

What happens when you drop a valve at 3200 ??

Things go bumpty bump clackety clack bangety bang...puff puff [laugh]

Head

All most turned the head into a Hemi

Piston

YEP, that's the valve head in the center

Busted the block, killed the head, ruined a nice sunny day.

I pulled this engine about a year ago and waited till yesterday to
pull the head. Kinda, in the back of my mind hopeing it had healed
by some miracle.

can ya say....OUCH!

Now it's time to build my P pumped FORD Cummins (yeah it does say FORD) on the ID tag.

Man, you need to put some warnings on those pictures. Those things aren't for the weak of heart. [tapdshut]

What were the mods at the time of that? :o

59FORD 12-12-2006 09:18 AM

MODS????

This was a fresh rebuild with 15k on it. 1/2 on the fuel, 3200 spring, HX35/16

THAT WAS IT!

Just a bad valve I guess. (sniff sniff)

timb 12-12-2006 09:25 AM

Dude! That aint right posting dirty pictures like that for us to see.[yuk] That is some major carnage that happened there. I'd imagine that it sounded like a ford when it turned loose.:o

Did you rebuild it yourself?

If somebody else did it, I'd hope it was under warranty. Must have been a bad valve.

(Yes, I enjoy stating the obvious for the third time, thank you... [duhhh] )

Yep, my build, with all new Cummins parts. The head only had 78k since
it was new. Just did a quick lap on the valves and checked for leaks.
Everything look fine, nice clean engine to start with, NO major wear..nada
nothing, just a freshen up job.

Timb

Actually it sounded like an old worn out dodge slant 6.......LOL

Ilikebikes 12-12-2006 12:59 PM

Ouch!! That is rough. But like you said, now you can get a P pump!!! :D

wannadiesel 12-12-2006 07:08 PM

I've seen one like that. Same kind of failure, stock motor (swapped into a Ford even, I kid you not) swallowed a valve. Maybe they just don't like being in Fords? :p

59FORD 12-12-2006 07:11 PM

I'll let that one pass...for now :(

It was the ole number 1 syndrome I guess

BTW, what's up with the pics in post deal. I couldn't get
any thing to work.

Just click on the little https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...nsertimage.gif button in the reply box, and paste the url of the pic in the dialog box that pops up.

The pic will show up like so:

I'm going to look at some parts tomorrow and one of them happens to be a '98 12v short block with 116k on the ticker. Dropped a valve like yours in #1. Where is the crack, if visible? What are the chances of cracking a the block when a valve drops? The guy says the cyl wall still looks fine and useable. If it looked ok, I was gonna hone it and put a new piston in it and run it. I'm assuming that if the cyl wall is still useable, then it may have dropped at a low RPM and shut off immediately. Any input is appreciated!
