Could you some advice for a first timer
 

Ok so first of all if you have read my thread "wont idle, new parts, why?" then you will know what my problems have been. But I was wondering if yall could provide some advice on taking out the fuel heater for inspection and then pulling the pump. Ive never pulled a pump before( done some timing but thats it)

anything I should look out for?

the fuel heater is fairly easy. other than some things being in your way, it's not difficult to remove. you'll see in the following pic that the fitting the filter spins onto, has a slot for a flat head screw driver (or whatever you use that breaks it loose). loosen that fitting and the fuel heater will come with it. they're 2 separate pieces. it would be a good idea to replace the seal on top of the heater just out of habit cuz it's probably kinda stiff.

as for pulling the pump, i've never pulled one before, but from what i've seen/read, it doesn't seem like a difficult task as long as your take your time and are aware of any precautions. i'm sure there's a link in the stickies somewhere that details the pump removal. i'll see if i can find it for you and post the link.

just dont drop the keyway for the cam gear, that can be a mess, other than that its not that bad. just be fortunate that your not doing it on a second gen.

I was watchin the videos on how to pull the pump and the T puller.......can you substitute anything else for that, or maybe rent at advance auto or sumthin?

I replaced mine and it was not that hard to do. The most important thing I found was to NOT CRANK the engine once you have TDC and be sure to pull the pin out once you find TDC. Be very careful when you slide the new pump into the gear, because for some reason the engine is engineered so that the woodruff key is at 6 o'clock when the engine is at TDC. It is kind of a leap of faith because you cannot see the key as you are putting the pump in. Hope this helps. P. s. I am a car mechanic, not a diesel mechanic and I did not have to use any special tools except the barring tool for turning the engine...good luck Mark

Pumps very easy, just take your time and do like they said and don't drop the woodruff key. But if you do drop it, then that gives you an excuse to do the KDP (I did it my first time pulling a pump). As for a t puller, you can use a timing gear puller as well, you can get them for about $15 on average for a throw away one. Hope this helps.
