Check engine light on?

I just picked up 93 DWR 4x4 auto, 172k. the check engine light comes on after a few minutes of running and stays on until you shut down. then it will come right back on after a few. On first gens what systems will cause the check eng to come on?? no computer is there?
I also have noticed as it runs at idle or freeway speeds I see a pulsating in the lights and also the amp guage. it does this a couple times per second it looks like. Any ideas? I will check all the connections in the morn but would like to have some where to start.
Curoius as to a 2wd 518 trans being useable in a 4x4 rig with the 518. If you can change the tail section for the Transfer case to fit?
Thanks a bunch to everyone for your help!!!

Apache,

I had the same thing goin'on in my charging system...sometimes just a little flickering, sometimes a full fledged strobe effect.

So,I ran a ground wire from my battery to under the voltage reg(on the firewall,in the middle),and a ground wire from the radiator core support to the alternator bracket...no more pulsating at all now.

Thanks guys, I found some bad wires under the hood. There are three extra smaller lines for accessories or something all on fuseable links. these were fried at some point and were crimped together poorly. repaired all them. Now no more check engine light or pulsing lights. ye ha!!!
