Cheap turbos ... Junk?

I was looking around on ebay and seen that there are HX40's going for around the $300 dollar mark.
Now ... my employer is a Cummins dealer and the cost for an HX40 with a 4" exhaust outlet is about 1200 dollars never mind what we have to sell it for...

Does anyone else think that the 300 dollar turbo will melt into a pile of slag the first time I use it? Or does Cummins just like to over price their stuff ??

Am I allowed to post the ebay link here or is that a smack with the ban hammer?

How bout them D-tech turbos from dieselpowersource.com?

I don't trust those master power turbos either. one of the first things a google search brings up is a guy who blew his up.

Dang it.
300 dollar turbo - too good to be true.

O well.
The turbo I sold this morning was an HX40 that had a 4" outlet ... I may just snag the core when it comes back and if the shaft isn't broken I will look at rebuilding it.

Then I will need a bigger exhaust, and bigger injectors to spool it, and then a converter to hold the power.
Aw crap.
I have been bitten by the mod bug ...

If it's an HX40 off an old engine that's a Holset it's still good. Used turbos seem allright as long as there is no shaft play.

It's an HX40 off of an industrial 8.3
There are several variants of an HX40 that I have found and it seems that most in the industrial application are using the 3" exhaust outlet.

By the time it get to dealer the price has been raised a couple times through the supply chain. They may be junk but then you might get lucky and they might not be. Remember Dealers are how the companies make money. It is up to the dealer to determine their price to the consumer.

I've been looking at these too. They're an HTB2/Phat Shaft 62 imitation, I guess. I found an "authentic" PS62 for $1295 shipped, will probably go with that.

Some people say all the S300 based turbos start out at the same place. I dunno.

all S300 are basically the same. All of the "big" turbo company's ie. HTT, II, yada yada yada, get their turbos from a supplier and have the exhaust housings built to there specs by another company. Some exhaust housing are factory BW or like parts. I know that bullseye power makes HTT's exhaust housing and exhaust manifold. They also make ATS's stuff. They were supposed to be working on some for city diesel, but haven't heard much on that for a while. They all supposedly do there little tricks to them, but in the end it's an S300 with a heafty price tag because someone put there name on it.

If this is a HOLSET HX40 it's not bad. I thought all HX40's were 4" outlet though... hmmmm. If it's "new" at that price it's cheap chinese junk.
