I am pretty sure you can't. I need confirmation. I am arguing with some idiot on a different forum. Thanks.

The bolt holes are different it will not bolt up. Also there is not a piston and drum mounted to the back of the 727 to engage od.

I'd have to look at the transmissions I have apart to check, but I'm pretty sure the 727 doesn't have the hydraulic ports necessary to pressurize the OD piston retainer.

The transmission doesn't have a locking torque converter, and the stock torque converter tends to be rather loose. In terms of durability though it's a pretty stout transmission that will serve you along time with proper maintenance and common sense operation. I believe fluid changes are recommended around every 25k and the band adjustment at the same interval. Though, because of the limited amount of material on transmission bands, I usually won't adjust them until I start to have a shifting issue.

The way I look at it, 92 says its like a 727, but built to fit an overdrive. I would probably have to be an idiot to think he meant we can just go bolt up these 518a ods to our 727 like some HEADs seem to think. Glad I can understand what I read, even if its between the lines. It would otherwise just be called a 727OD. No, 92 says its a 518A, its like a 727 but with an overdrive.

That also is understood. I don't the full mechanics of either trans, but one is 3 speed, another is built to marry an overdrive unit. The 518 is going to have the hydraulic port, valves, plug holes, and even an appropriate mounting area for the od unit. All makes good since.

Crow, anyone?

A-518, 46RH, 46RE - This series of transmissions (hereafter called A-518), is based on the Chrysler A-727 series transmission design. Gear ratios are the same as A-727-series transmissions. They share many of the same internal parts with A-727 series transmissions except for the OD tailshafts. The transmission pan has an identical shape to the A-727 series transmission pans, but it is much deeper. The OD units will not interchange with tailshafts from A-727 series transmissions.
Not really sure who's eatin the crow here.?.? 92 has been just as right on as all the rest of these cats.

The only point I contested was about the 518 OD unit bolting up to a 727. That's it. I knew from experience that it could not be done. I was trying to be helpful with my experience so other people over there wouldn't try to buy an OEM OD unit to add to their 727.

We thought about this long and hard for our 440 swap in the ramcharger. It was easier to machine off the bell housing, and get an ultra bell to bolt on the 518 so it would bolt to a big block. We eventually scrapped the idea and went with a gear venders OD.
