"bump" IP timing?

I have read in a few posts that bumping the Injector pump timing can help with bad MPGs. I just finished my first tankfull of fuel - all city driving - about 14mpg. My last D250 did a lot better. I blow whitish smoke when warming up. I know the KSB is okay. CAn someone explain to me what happens when you bump up the Injector pump timing and what effects it will have? Should I try it?

Thanks.

When adjusting the timing, you are changing the moment when the injectors 'pop' relative to the position of the crankshaft. Advancing the pump causes the injectors to 'pop' open at an earlier point in the crankshafts rotation. This 'point' is usually expressed in degrees of crank rotation, but is also expressed in milimeters of plunger lift, especially on 1st gens with the VE pump.

The effects that are worth mentioning (imo) are increased fuel economy and improved throttle response. Simply put, injecting the fuel earlier (advancing) gives the fuel more time to burn, thus more power is made versus the same injection event started at a later moment. Improved throttle response naturally follows.

Should you try it? Yup--it's free and can be changed back if you don't like it

Does anybody know of instructions for doing this (or maybe the "definitive thread" on the subject)? I need "s-shaped" metric wrenches for this, right? I'm SURE that the Chilton's book I ordered won't have too much info on this - can't afford the Factory Service Manual yet.

There are a TON of threads discussing timing adjustments and the pros and cons. G1625S pretty much summed it up and member DODGE92 had a GREAT idea on how to actually make the adjustments, see his gallery here for a pic of it,

As far as doing it "by the book" I can`t help ya, I do know you will need a dial indicator thats graduated in millimeters and a couple of other specific tools, I did price them out thru SnapOn but they are VERY$$$$$. I would try the 1/8 inch bump and see if you like it, if not it`s easy enuff to put back.

Harbor Freight has the "S" wrench you need in a $10 set.

If you search for "extension" under my name you will probably scare up a good set of instructions.
