Building Another One - Questions

Hey guys,

I wrecked my truck a couple weeks ago, and will be pulling my motor to put into a new frame to basically be a new truck. I got a deal on a W350 rolling chassis with no motor and a junk body, and I plan to swap my motor in and get a new body.

I'm wondering what engine hoists are up to the task of lifting this massive motor? A friend of mine built a 95 CTD and said he hired a local tow company to lift the motor out of his.

Also, while the motor is out, I'm thinking I should do some PM to it. Looking at doing seals on the timing case, as my injection pump to timing case seal leaks already. Going to fix my KDP while I'm there. My rear main seal leaks as well, so I'll be doing that. Any advice you guys have about seals would be appreciated!

I seriously considered just buying something else to drive, but the more I looked at my wrecked truck in the driveway, the more I knew I just had to rebuild it.

Thanks for everyone's help so far. I'll post some pictures of this frame once it gets delivered this week.

I would get the front and rear main seals that have the wear sleeve in the kit. This will fix the grove in the crank from where the seal rides. You MUST buy the kit, the seal has a larger ID to fit over the speedi sleeve, the regular seal doesn't work. I'd also recommend buying the seals from any place that sells PAI branded parts. PAI is an aftermarket label, but many of the parts are made by the same mfg as the Cummins branded stuff, for a lot less money. Make sure you get the gasket for the rear seal retainer as well.

The engine only weighs about 1200lbs at most. The dry weight listed in the Cummins specs is something like 970lbs. I just use my regular 2 ton engine crane ("cherry picker") and it does just fine. It certainly is a bit heavy with the boom fully extended but I've done them without trouble.
