Bosch VE Injection Pump Setup/Tuning

I bought my truck back in May 2012 having no prior diesel experience. The craigslist ad the guy had said that Scheid had bored the pump out "10 over." After driving the truck for a short time, I started to realize that it hazes almost constantly, regardless of how much or how little I am on the throttle. I took the truck to Thoroughbred Diesel and the only real response I got to the boring over was "that's a very large bore" and nothing really else that would help me fix the problem other than telling me to get different injectors and fuel pin/spring. To add to the problem, my fuel economy is terrible. I have some friends who get between 21-25mpg unloaded in their first gens while I'm struggling to even get 19 unloaded (about 18.6 average).

Since I know that pump has already been tweaked, all I want to do is try to restore it as close to "factory" as possible. I understand the "smoke screw" on top of the AFC housing should clear up some of the haze at idle and low-throttle. I just want to know about how much the screw needs to be turned to clear up the haze.

Whenever I get about 50% throttle under about 10-15psi of boost, the truck smokes like a train. So I'm also wanting to know how to clear some of that up while lowering EGTs. I plan on installing an HX-35 or somehow fabricate an HE351VGT and install it within the near future, and I know both of which will clear up some of the smoking.

If anyone knows of any place I can find the "factory" settings for all of the adjustments on the pump, that would be great. I just need some help while I'm still learning this whole diesel thing Any helpful replies are appreciated!

The 4.10 gears are your mileage problem. I could get 19 driving fairly hard with 3.54's. Now I can get 22 driving the same way with 3.07's.

Nice truck! gotta agree with RedNeck, 4.10s are costing you a little mpg. IMHO 18.6 aint bad, really good actually, a lot of guys, especally with newer trucks that are claiming 18 - 22 are not gettin even close to that. Your truck must pull like a Bull Dozer!

When I started playin with my pump I started to get a feel for what circut controls what condition. There are some very knowlagble guys on this board, I'll wait n watch as they chime in.

Thanks for the comment about the truck's looks! She's in the body shop now having all the dents knocked out and resprayed dark charcoal. I'll have pics up soon as I get it back and reassembled!
