bad lift pump?
bad lift pump?
My dad and I just picked up another 93.
The guy said it quit running a year or two ago and he just had it towed home and never messed with it.
I was getting foamy fuel at the injectors so I pulled the fuel supply line at the lift pump, attached a new rubber line and dropped it in a five gallon can of fuel, bled the injectors and It fired up!
After idling for a few minutes I Drove it about 5-6 miles towards home and it died. Rebled the injectors and got it to fire back up but it would only stay running at a real lazy idle and that was with the pedal to the floor, but then died again.
We have yet to check fuel and air filters.
I wondered if it could be the lift pump and if there is a tell tale sign of a bad lift pump without having a pressure gauge? Thanks guys

I had a bad lift pump on mine. It would run fine, but would not start (with the starter) after sitting for any length of time. Foamy fuel at the injectors like you are having. I could pull start it and it would run fine again. A mechanic friend of mine told me to replace the lift pump, 60,000 miles later still running great.
1st thing, make sure your not leaking fuel into the crank case. Sounds a lot like it is sucking air into the fuel. Sense you bypassed the tank and it still did it, could be the lift pump. If the filter is clogged up, the injection pump could pull enough suction to find another place to get air. You could also have a bad IP.
By the way, you and your dad must be strong. Them things ain't light.

Does the lift pump have a manual lever to push fuel to the injectors? If so you should be able to crack the nut on a injector and then pump fuel to it using the manual lever. If it's a bad pump it will have no resistance. If it's good the pressure will get so hard your thumb will hurt.
haha, good one one cougar.

Never had fuel come out the injectors using the priming lever, always had to crank it.
Well I got some time this past weekend to tinker with this issue.
FUEL FILTER
I wish I could post a pic of this thing
. He mist have got water in the fuel and then it sat because the filter was so rusty I couldn't believe it. I dumped what was left in the filter into a clear jug and it looked like swamp.water!
New filter and she's purrs like a kitten. I hope it didn't do any serious damage IP wise, especially because this pump is only supposed to have 5000 miles on it.
