axle nuts

any better ideas than the hookey clips used to lock the axle nut?

Do a search I believe there is a new style lock nut that has a jam plate in between the 2 nut's that you bend the tab over ?

That pin nut setup is interesting.

In my notes I have Dorman 05306 for the double nut with tab system. Replacement keeper is Dorman 618-046.

I have these on my D70 on my truck so i know they work/fit. I prefer them to the bent over tab style as those tabs eventually break off from being bent back and forth repeatedly.

Thanks for confirming that for us. I for one will be doing that swap when I do my brakes.

No problem. It is nice to only have to carry one socket for both diffs.

new style ?? The 2 nuts and bendable tab been around for years the POS nye lock nut and drive in lock is the new style. When I first got my truck I put new nuts and drive in locks I had a brake cable freeze up a few mount later so I had to pull it apart the drive in lock where waded up. I looked a round and found out the old style 2 nut and a lock from the Dana 60 where the same looked at some of the other new style nuts stage 8 and the like but I was short on cash so I just put the good old 2 nuts and a bendable lock type in it. The bendable lock washer should be replaced each time they are taken apart Ken

I used the Stage 8 X-Lock a little pricey but I don't have to worry about them failing.

I'm using the D60 front spindle jam-nut style. I like it.

That system is ingenious. I want them.

mknittle 03-18-2015 09:15 AM

Stage 8 is about $60 a wheel. That costs more than my wheel[laugh]

Well, if you replace the nylock every time, or replace the bend-a-tab keeper every time, and like most of us who use out trucks fairly hard get into the brakes once in awhile, they'll pay for themselves over time.

The pin style jam nuts are cheaper, but the stage 8 gives you the correct bearing lash/feel on install, instead of having to guess slightly loose so it's right after a jam nut.
