Has anyone had problems with their autometer tach that has the probe on the alternator? Mine was working fine then the needle started to deflect and at times just goes to zero and stays there for a while. I marked the probe when I got it to a good spot on the alternator and it has not moved. I checked all conections, grounds, fuses etc. Any suggestions? Thanks.

 

no problems with mine yet. does it do it when you push the breaks or the turn on the turn signals?

 

mine did that and i found a short in a wire

 

Mine's gone wacky like that, I just haven't found the time to diagnose it yet.

 

When it first started acting up it would vibrate in time with the turn signal. I never noticed it with the brakes. Now it moves around all the time.

 

Was it one of the probe wires?

 

switch to a different power source,not connected to the turn sigal or break lights, i taped off the back side of the fuse block and added a seperate fuse.
just a thought.

 

I used the fuse for the cruise control which was unused in my truck. I'll run a hot wire direct from the battery and see if that helps. If it does I'll pull power right off the ignition switch. Thanks

 

I ran the hot and ground right to the battery and still no change. I guess I'll call Autometer and see if they can give me any help.

 

did you try moving the prob to a different spot? like 1/2 inch one way or the other

 

Yup, I've moved that sucker back and forth across the alternator so many times I expect to wear thru the case any time now. It was pretty fussy to get set up when I 1st installed it but it was working great.
