Automatic tranny cold start question.

Never been a fan of the autos but I have one now and must assimilate. In the mornings it seems the tranny has to be in gear for 5-10 seconds before she really wants to move. After that the transmission performs quite well. Whats going on inside that hydro-mystical-thingamabob we call the automatic?

Slip it into neutral for a few, the converter needs to fill back up.

Same thing ... I learned from reading the threads to let it idle in N for a bit and then drop it in gear ... absolutely no problems after learning that little piece of information

Start truck in neutral. Sit 30 second. Put in drive

Go get coffee.

Never worry again..

Btw, you can update the valve body to correct the "pump no function in park" issue. There's a thread where angry Johnny links a supplier for the mod part.

That would be a good mod if you have the tranny open.

That's actually on my list when I hit 12,000 miles on my fluid. Already have those parts to fix that torque converter drainback.

Still waiting to catch the inch lbs torch wrench on sale so I can tear into to my transmission for the first time and adjust bands etc...

Is this valve body upgrade a BIG job once the pan is dropped?

You have to remove the valve body and replace the manual valve. Sonnax makes them but since you are already there you may also want to make some other upgrades.

What "other upgrades" are you referring to, besides swapping out the manual valve, while one is that deep into the tranny, Angry Johnny?

Well there are many upgrades that can be done. It all depends on how far you want to go. Sonnax Chrysler 47RH Transmission

After going through a few transmissions in the last few years, all I can tell you is DON'T CHEAP OUT ON THE VALVE BODY!! My last one required machining and sleeveing to fix worn valve bores.

Hi, no need to wait on the inch-pound torque wrench, set it at 6 foot lbs. I use a 5-75 ft lbs torque wrench if I don’t have my inch lb wrench handy.

Also, do the bands by feel, tighten just enough to take up all the slack, and then follow the factory torque procedure, using 6 lbs-ft

I did think about that option... however, I don't own a torque wrench at the moment of any kind... so using a different setting or converting is not an option... I laid my thumb wide open the other day so I'm stitched up at the moment and can't do any of the projects I need to wrap up as summer ends and hunting season starts!!!

Ive saw a combo pack of torque wrenches for sale (in lbs and ft lbs) locally keeping my eye open for that deal while I heal up a little bit...

When you say do the bands by feel ... do yiu mean that you actually feel the adjustments tightening up and at WHAT POINT do you then back the bands off the appropriate turns??
