auto trans removal question

I almost have my auto trans out of my truck in my sig, I just have a few questions.

First off is there and easy way to undo the shifterlinkage/tv cable at the tranny? oil lines? any tips on those?

Also, I need to support the rear of the motor when i remove the trans? whats the best way to do this.

When i seperate the trans from the motor, is there anything i need to watch/hold in place?

Thanks Derek

I would support the engine with a block of wood and a floor jack, or at least a bottle jack, against a strong part of the bell housing. I have a manual trans so don't know if the bell housing is part of the trans or not, but find a good strong area and try to spread the load with wood. Don't forget that you have to disconnect the torque converter from the flex plate. Then be careful that the torque converter doesn't fall off the trans input shaft as you are removing it. I use a motorcycle jack to remove the Getrag and it may also work well for an auto...good luck Mark

The bell housing stay on the motor? I thought it would come out. so i keep the torque converter on the trans when i remove it?

I don't want to steer you wrong, but in most cases of ATs the TC comes out with the trans...Hopefully a DTR AT guy will chime in. This I do know, It is a relatively easy job on most RWD applications and I have pulled my Getrag 3 times and reinstalled it, by myself. The auto cannot be any harder....sounds strangely like famous last words doesn't it? ...Mark

The Torque converter is bolted on to the flexplate which is bolted to the motor. So those will stay there, the transmission shaft will slide out of the TC. You can take the TC off by takin out the little window on the other side of the engine adapter plate and then loosening all the bolts around the TC, by rotating the motor. The window is pretty much the opposite of the starter.

it is better to unbolt the TC from the flex plate before you remove the trans. That way the TC comes down with the trans and does not put unnecessary stress on the the trans input shaft. Same goes for installation, slide the TC into the trans and then bolt up the trans and rotate the trans and the motor to get the bolt holes to line up.

Yea i've never ever heard good things about leaving the TC up on the flexplate.

and that's a couple more inches you have to pull it outward to get the input out of the TC, just unbolt the TC and leave it on the input shaft until you get it on the ground because even then you'll have to twist and turn the TC to get it off the input, it locks into place.

Should be 6 bolts on the TQ. TQ comes out with the tranny. Bell housing is part of the auto will not come off. Take off the cross member let the tranny and motor drop a little you can get to the top bolts on the bell housing use enough extentions on your socket to reach to the back of the tranny and put some electrical tape on a swivel to make it a little stiffer so it dosen't flop around.

oh alright, thanks for the tip. Thats just how we pulled the 47rh off the motor i got it from but that was with it out of the truck so it was easy. I'll remember that when I swap trannys.
