Another question - 2wd vs 4wd - manual / auto
Some more questions from a NOTnewbie. I already owned a '92 2wd. I guess I remember getting around 18-20 mpg's. I am interested in the differences in 2wd and 4wd and standard and auto transmissions. Mine was a 2wd/auto trans. I really liked the auto trans but have no problem driving a standard if it will save significant amounts of fuel. I like the 4wd because they are already "jacked up". I had my 2wd "jacked" and used the 7226s springs - it was a kidney jarring experience. Plus there are a number of kits available for the W250. Here are a few questions:
Which is more long lasting and dependable - Manual or Automatic trans?
Which trans is best for fuel economy?
Is the 4wd dependable or is it just something expensive waiting to go out?
What would I have to watch out for if buying a used 4wd?
What's your favorite model and why?
Thanks!

Getrags and 518`s both have their good/bad points, but in the long run a manual is simpler, so probably the more dependable of the two.
I don`t know about fuel economy, but my auto/4wd gets right around 20 on the hiway (thats WITH my abnormally heavy right foot
)
In my experience the 4wd is very reliable, I`ve been driving 4wd Dodges in one form or another for about 10 years now and have not had one failure.
What to look out for? well the 205 `case is very stout, so unless it`s pouring oil or make any crunchy noises it`s prob good to go. Might want to ck the wear items, i.e. U-joints, esp the ones in the outer knuckles...esp if 4wd was used alot, easy fix tho.
My fav is in my sig
