Alternator Field Resistance
Alternator Field Resistance
Can anyone tell me the field resistance for the stock alternator?
With the black plastic connector removed I'm getting around 8Ω, with no continuity to the alternator case.
I'm doing some trouble shooting since my truck just started over charging and burned out the headlights. I'm pretty sure the voltage regulator (external) went bad, but I'm checking my grounds and connections in the rest of the system before I throw in a new volt. reg. and fry the new one.

Just replaced my regulator with a Mopar and guage doesn't shake and it charges at 14.2v. Imagine that. Its unbelievable how many bad regulators I've gotten from Napa.Even the ones I thought were "good" were overcharging. Last one I put in showed 15.2 at idle and I thought that was good. No more Napa's for me.
FYI, the alternator seems to be charging just fine with 8Ω across the field terminals.
Hey,DDD,,,i went throught "5" made in china voltage reg., on my 91.5 ,,,changed brands,,it's costing us time ,,,but the the companys that have this stuff made ,,,it cost them money. You would ,,think ????

Maybe it has changed over the years, but I was taught in vocational mechanics school in high school that a voltage regulator and alternator are ALWAYS changed as a pair. I think that it was because the usual cause of VR failure is failure of the Alternator and vice versa...Mark
