Alternator Field Resistance

Can anyone tell me the field resistance for the stock alternator?

With the black plastic connector removed I'm getting around 8Ω, with no continuity to the alternator case.

I'm doing some trouble shooting since my truck just started over charging and burned out the headlights. I'm pretty sure the voltage regulator (external) went bad, but I'm checking my grounds and connections in the rest of the system before I throw in a new volt. reg. and fry the new one.

No more Napa's for me.
OK. Same here. I just burned through two Napa brand Chinese made regulators. Today I installed a Dodge brand (PN 5234625) for $50, and the voltage was 15.0V at 30F, then dropped to 14.5V as the engine bay warmed up. No more flicker at idle, either. Idle voltage was <0.04VAC. The Dodge part reads "Made in the USA" and comes with a 12 month warranty, also.

FYI, the alternator seems to be charging just fine with 8Ω across the field terminals.

Maybe it has changed over the years, but I was taught in vocational mechanics school in high school that a voltage regulator and alternator are ALWAYS changed as a pair. I think that it was because the usual cause of VR failure is failure of the Alternator and vice versa...Mark
