Most people will advise you to not go with the K&N; after a few thousand miles, quite a few people running them discover a layer of dust covering their air intake hose. Not a good thing... However, I'm not certain that most of those reports aren't due to improperly oiling the filter; of course, the entire oil hassle is enough for me to look for alternatives anyways.

The "standard" thing to do on our trucks is to install a BHAF; this is a paper filter about three times the size of the stock one; flows good enough, filters superbly, lasts a long time, relatively cheap. To mount one a special mount is required; the "standard" thing to do is make a custom mount with the template found at the "sticky" at the top of the forum.

Cummins really just suck too much air for a K&N to work properly. Have you put your hand in the airbox intake while the truck is idling? Its amazing how much air they move at even an idle. It must be a hurricane in there when its at 2600 RMPs and full boost!

Anyway, K&Ns don't filter as well as a paper filter. The space is just bigger so you get some fine particulate matter comging through. On two strokes that get rebuilt regularly, this isn't an issue but you want your Cummins to last forever don't you? The other problem is that you Cummins will suck through that K&N so hard that it will pull most of the oil out of the first time you romp on it. Then you are left with a relatively dry filter with much larger holes for particles to go through. They flow better than a stock paper but I still won't run one.

I just modded my stock airbox with a 2" holesaw. Works great.

Isn't the air between the turbo and intake moving at like 250+mph at WOT and 25-30psi of boost? These engines do suck an amazing amount of air too.

Chass, if you want to open your intake up some more before getting a BHAF try eliminating the entire stock box. You can take a bungy cord and use it to hold the filter on to the intake pipe using just that one stock plastic piece. It's basically a mini BHAF. To be sure it officially looks redneck, place a second multi-colored bungy cord around the bottom of the filter to hold it up off the fender.

I did that and it worked great over stock (increased turbo whistle a lot too!). The main reason to still change to a BHAF is the filter is at least 2-3X's the size/volume of the stock one.

Or I could just pull the headlight and get the sawsall out to make a huge hole to mount my giant funnel right into the airbox j/k

I actually filled the stock airbox with holes pretty good. particulary on the top and front where there isn't much space between the filter and the box. I don't know if it helped much because I was tweaking the pump at the same time . . .

Well, I know what you mean. I've seen the pics but I guess I was trying to make it sound like I would have an 18" diameter hole where my headlights and marker lights should be

Maybe If I build a customer grill I can make a tunnel ram air intake that will push more air in than anything ever before!

Actually, before I built the Stock-Pot deal, I had modified the OEM intake much like you describe.

I removed the OEM inlet horn and fabricated a funnel of sorts that looked through a large hole below the light assemblies. I kept it as large as possible all the way to the OEM filter box.

It worked quite well.

EDIT ~ If I can find it behind the shed, I'll post some pics.

That is something I would love to do one day.

As long as a bunch of water doesn't get intaked into you're BHAF, I think that'd be the way to do it; front downforce and ram air!
