A518 Slushbox Goo

Hopefully you AT guys like our in house expert, Angry Johnny, will chime in.

Any thoughts as to what this crud is in my trans pan ? No metal, as far as I can see, well at least no "sparkly stuff", just brownish stuff. Fluid smelled clean, no funky burning smell, but then I looked at the filter, and there was this Blue color stuff in there.

Any ideas what that blue junk is ? I assume that the other brown stuff is clutch linings.

The light color straggly thing is a pine needle that fell onto the filter while it was sitting there.

Thanks a bunch.

clutch disc media disintegrating within the trans?
ive only seen that when I wiped my OD clutch discs on a 700r4.
but it wasn't as profound as what your showing. what does the valve body look like?
If your doing a rebuild yourself or a rebuilder ask them to save your discs it would be nice to see what they look like.
thanks for the pics T man.

I would say those blue pieces are teflon seal rings. Most likely from the stator support area where it seals at the front clutch drum or one of the servos, most likely the front one. They weren't factory so I would assume that trans has been into before.

Didn't remove the valve body, but everything inside the pan area looked sparkling clean. No nothing crazy looking in there

That would be correct. The transmission was "rebuilt" previously, before I owned it.

Time to look into either a rebuild, or swap a new, performance unit.

I don't have the physical space to rebuilt it myself, so it's either farm it out, or buy an aftermarket do up.

Thanks guys !

Appreciate the help.

Had the pan of a 727 with 200K on it look like that less the blue stuff and pine needle. Pulled the pan because it started slipping.

I totally dislike the 727 I have regardless of the simplicity.
I would of much rather had the 518 or the 46 but I made the silly step in going to a conversion of a rag and now back to the 727.

How was the tranny acting/performing?

If you still have the fluid you can send it to Blackwell Lab and they can dissect if for you.

The trans shifts 1-3 fine. No 4th gear.

I'm sitting in the trans repairing shop. They are a bit peeved because the wanted to easily connect the,obd1 connector to the truck, but I've got it blocked with all my relay work I installed in the wiring harness under the hood.

They must have been able to connect it, as I just looked in the bay. 5he truck is gone, and on a test drive.

I didn't think so, but they say they can pull codes from the computer. The guy at the counter must be thinking of other vehicles with one. They were accessing the PCM today.

Here is the only diagnostic port that I can find on our trucks

Pretty basic. Code 45 is the OD solenoid. This web site has a good list. http://www.troublecodes.net/dodge/ra...sel-1992-1995/

You can pull the codes by cycling the key switch three times

I have used this trick on 24V as the codes come up on the ODO electronic display area.

How does that work on our old 1st gens??

The check engine light flashes a two digit code. You simply count the flashes and decipher according to many online decoders. I have used the decoder on minimopar.net over the years.

There is a list of the codes in the sticky somewhere. I doubt that the codes are going to help if the blue wire has 12 volts and grounding the orange wire doesn't get you O/D because that bypasses everything except the solenoid. If it's not the solenoid then it's mechanical in the transmission.
