96 12V going to California
just looking for some advice...
i'm planning to ship over my 96 12V from NY to CA. 240K miles, automatic, mild performance upgrades (all the low buck/easy ones), trans mildly redone. its not pretty but it runs great. i need a vehicle like this on the west coast for a work project (fits the bill due to cost of operation and overall investment). what are some of the items i should be looking at/for, for it to be continued trouble free miles? *will i get a hard time IF i get pulled over by local police (emissions stuff/smog requirements)? |
By '96 Cali got a special Cali only emission package for the engine.
I would look into the DMV laws. Things like can you put a '96 12V in a vehicle that is newer than a '96?... if that is part of your plan. Does it need the Cali. emission only EGR intake to be registered in Cali.? |
plan is the get truck here and drive it as is.
no plans for a project truck. its just transportation. paid for, functional. no new payments per month. |
from:
California Diesel Smog Check Requirement - Do diesel cars or trucks need smog tests? Diesel Smog Check in California Diesel Smog Check - Since 2010 California has required all diesel trucks and diesel passenger cars which are 1998 model year or newer, and weight 14,000 GVWR or under, undergo a biennial smog inspection similar to their gasoline counterparts. appears i'm good. it refers to 98 and newer. mine is a dinosaur. |
Weigh it and register it. AAA does it,well worth the membership to avoid the DMV here. You should be done aside from insurance. Public scales are available everywhere in urban locales.
|
Smog check for Diesels in California is '98 and newer. California also waives smog checks for all vehicles '76 and older.
Other than the initial transfer they will just want their yearly fees. |
He has to get it weighed. That will determine what the weight fee will be. It's a big $10 at the scales. They'll ask if it's for DMV.
I bought mine from Dave Smith and had to get it weighed before registering it. Unfortunately,I had to use the DMV as AAA cannot do new registrations only used. $314 for my 2007. $200+ for weight fee. I could qualify for car plates but as posted, the camper can't come off. |
It's too bad they don't go with a standard weight. My registration says 5600 but know the truck is 5880 without me in it. Not sure how much a couple hundred pounds matters to weight penalty thought.
|
My 93 costs me about $300.00 per year. I actually got away with registering it as a car for 15 years. If you had a shell on it they considered it a car but you could not take it off. I got caught by a CHP with it off and got a "fix it" ticket so now I have to register it as a truck. They know what it is due to the License plate numbers. They have changed that rule so a shell does not work any longer. Make sure they truck is as empty as possible including fuel every little bit counts.

I will never trust them. I complied with CARB rules and the BAR tried to arrest and fine me. I will never go back.
