93' Oil Pan Removal
 

Has anyone removed the oil pan from a 93 4x4 with the engine still in the truck. The manual I have says remove from truck. If I can get at it while in the truck I could change the thrust washers myself...I think?<br>Any suggestions would be great.<br>Thanks<br>Todd

I have a 92 4X4, I was told you can remove the oil pan by undoing the motor mounts and jacking the engin up. This should give you enough room to remove the oil pan. Good luck.

Thats what I'm currently doing to my 93 but I've allready got the trany &amp; engine adapter off mine. The people at Cummins<br>said to jack engine up to get it done. :'(<br> <br> ramguy

After talking to a couple mechanics I was under the understanding the engine had to be pulled. The engine is now out and they should have the job done by tomorrow.<br> The thrust washer was lying in the oil pan. They figure the lip that holds it in place broke off when my flex plate went.<br> I'll keep you informed.<br>Thanks for the advice.

Just for the record and to protect my good name. ;D I know you can take the oil pan off without removing the engine. Cummins did it to my engine just a few mouth ago. :)<br><br>tgleason, good luck with the engine repairs.

Well the truck is back in service and I thought I should update everyone. They pulled the engine, set the valves, replaced the rod bearings, main bearings, thrust washer plus other gaskets and seals that have to be replaced when doing a job like this and I recored my rad since it had to be done this summer and it was already out. Plus other misc. things like oil, rad fluid etc.. The total after 15% tax was $2900 Canadian. It hurt since I only paid $6500 for the truck total.<br><br> THe only reason I replaced the main bearings and rod bearings was becuase the engine was already out. They had virtually no wear but I figured, its out now so lets have all the bearings new down there.<br> The paint and tires will have to wait for a while after that bill.<br> Thanks for the advice. If my garage was done I may have considered trying the job with the engine in the truck. For the price I paid I could have bought an engine hoist and other interesting tools. Live and learn. <br> The mechanic is pretty sure the flexplate ripping out caused the pull on the crankshaft which would have caused the thrust washer to break off.<br>Thanks<br>Todd

The more we pull outta these engines, the more likely there will be &quot;downstream&quot; damage.... the flexplate is one of those things.. It hurts to go fast and make smoke...... but......<br>spank me and make me feel cheap, I luv it....<br><br>Bob.

I did succsefully pull my oil pan w/ the engine in the truck. Just pulled the 4 motor mount bolts ,fanshroud &amp; upper intake hose. :) 93 3500 2 wheel drive. <br>I was impressed with the oil pan, for a engine w/ 172k on it there was nothing in the pan but oil &quot;NO SLUDGE&quot; ;D ;D ;D<br><br> ramguy [eyecrazy]

I can also add that the pan can be removed without pulling the engine.<br><br>Just as the others said you need to disconnect the motor mounts, etc. we also removed the pick up tube to help clear the diff on mine. :)
