93' Dodge Diesel, 250, 4X4, Ext. Cab.

I know that you can help, me.

My overdrive, was kicking in and out, got so bad that it is using fuel like it has no overdrive. Changed the VSS and it was ok for a few days, then it is as bad as before. Now when the speedo is only working when the O D, kicks in, both bouncing around like crazy. Your advice, PLEASE!

Thanks, Recksi.

There are a few key elements to make your speedo and overdrive work correctly. Check the VSS/connection, speedometer gear ratio reducer/connection, TPS/connection. Intact wiring and good connections must be established..........but each of those 3 parts play an important roll in your speedo/overdrive. Looks like a VSS or TPS issue.

well, the OD sounds like the throttle position sensor might be going out, but the speedo is a little odd. maybe the pcm is dying?

Thanks for the help. I will check out all of your suggestions. I know what is VSS, now I have learned what is TPS, but what is PCM. I need a good repair book, what and where?

Great site.

My speedo only works intermittently. Usually bouncing all over the place, then when it starts reading like it should I think its off by 5mph or so.

It seems every 91.5-93 Dodge CTD (automatic equipped) is stricken down at one point or another with a bouncing speedo and intermitant overdrive.

you can get a copy of a Field Service Manual (FSM) for your year/model from eBay usually for $60.- to $90.-

Also, you can ask on this forum if somebody can explain the connections from the PCM to the TPS or whatever you need to know.

my bouncing speedo and inoperative cruise control were cured by replacing the ratio adapter, a little gearbox between the tranny and the VSS , .... I likely paid too much ($120cdn) but when I was looking someone here suggested NAPA online, ... fwiw

Great site.
PCM = powertrain control module ... basically the trucks brain.

It's mounted behind the battery on the driver's side fender, behind the headlight. Box is approximately 4" x 6", color = black ... just follow all the wires.
