92 5 speed w/no speedometer

Father in Laws 92's speedometer went out and cant trace the problem. I have not seen or worked on it, so this is all by phone, but I am stumped. Replaced cable and gears on tranny to dash and put in a new dash, with no avail. This is on a 2wd with getrag. Any body have any ideas.

Replaced the gear in the tranny?? Mine a little jumpy, by that I mean it did not work but would jump from 0 to 5 or so every once in a while. Rolled under to check vss and found the yoke was a littl loose and the internal gear was not turning. tightened the yoke and its like new again. May be something to check.

Are you saying it is a 1992 with a CABLE-DRIVEN speedometer ??

If it is in fact cable-driven, then put a drill (reverse---I think) on the transmission end of the cable, spin the drill, and have someone watch the speedometer; if the needle comes up and the odometer advances, then all is well from there forward (if the needle stays put and the odometer is losing ground, then switch drill directions).

If it works with the drill, then remove the adapter/reverser from the transmission and see if spinning the input turns the output; if not, then there is a little HEX-shaped shaft inside that is broken.

I replaced the one on mine with a section cut from an Allen-wrench that I milled to match the original.
