'92 with a "41" Trouble Code

Hey guys. After reading the "how to" on trouble codes (thanks wannadiesel) I've discovered that my truck (see sig) is giving me a "12" and a "41". I know about the 12 as it was me that did it the other day. It says the "41" is "Generator field not switching properly". What exactly does this mean and how the hell do I fix it? I'm a fairly mechanically inclined guy and have all my own tools so I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty by any means.
Where would I start to fix this problem?
Sorry, I'm kinda new to this diesel thing (I'm an old VW guy )so I'm sure I'll be asking more questions as I keep having more stupid little problems with my truck.
Thanks!
-Mike
