518 band adjust
It is covered in the service manuals.
Front band is 2nd gear. It is externally adjusted.
rear band it reverse and MANUAL 1st. It is internally adjusted.
Each vehicle type has its own specs.
Rear band----- usually is set to 3 turns loose.
Front band-----usually is set to 2 turns loose.

Ok loosen the jam nut, tighten the center stud to 72 inch pounds, now, if you know the spec for that band, turn the center stud CCW or out the required number of turns, and hold it while snugging the jam nut.
2nd gear/front band.
Some think it is an adjustment to get a shift 'feel'. Set it to spec and forget it.
It does have this spec to balance the 2-3 shift. If it feels different when you go for a ride, It is my opinion the fresh fluid has more effect on the shift!!!!
( during the shift to 3rd the front band must release as the front clutches apply) this is an overlap of two parts of the trans , like a trans brake!!!!
Auto trans 101 is over!!!
