5 speed swap

Where do I start is there a complete kit you can buy?

92power 05-05-2013 09:23 PM

And I have a 92 w250 5.9

mwlu711 05-05-2013 09:43 PM

Well we need more details such as are you going from auto to manual or g360 to nv4500?

92power 05-05-2013 09:48 PM

I'm going from auto to manual and yeah the nv4500

mwlu711 05-05-2013 10:27 PM

I did the same thing on my 91.5 what I did was shop around and get all the parts from an nv4500 truck you will need the adapter plate off the back of the engine you will need pedals out of a first generation the hard part is finding a tranny with no core charge the other thing is you will either need to do one of three things with your tcase 1 change it out for one out of a first generation manual 2 buy a new 29 spline input shaft and baering and have the case bored to fit or3 which I don't recomend unless you are machinest and welder and very good at it is build a stepped coupling if you choose to do it pm me and I will let you in on how I did it.and finaly you will need a starter out of the manual truck and I believe it has to be 94 or newer any way that's how I would do it

Has anyone here done a 6 speed conversion ? Do they exist ????

Can it be done ???

That would be cool, huh ?

You would want a longer wheel base truck for that 6 speed, as it is about 6 inches longer that the NV-4500.
I have thought about using one on my black crew cab that is an auto 727 right now, but I am leaning toward using a NV-4500 I have instead.
You would need to move the trans crossmember back several inches and re drill new holes in the frame to mount the NV-5600

Yup there are a few builds, and lot of info in the archives for the NV5600 swap. Not a cheap conversion though.

I've thought about it too...but would probably go with a Gearvendor OD unit before I went 6 speed. Or I would go with a Eaton Fuller 10 speed. for the same price as 6 speed.

I don't know about putting a Eaton in it, you would never even use the first 7 gears. It would be more functional to put a Spicer 7 speed and t-case out of a international

Best Bet is to buy a complete truck and just swap stuff over then you could even sell it as a Auto complete n running ?5sp stuff is expensive

Except for Google searches like this one.

The Spicer 7 had issues because it was in big trucks hauling big loads, in our trucks I don't think you could haul enough weight to have the issue. My pockets aren't deep enough to try though lol.

grandaddy goat 05-19-2013 09:38 PM

Correction, I was thinking of a 6+1 Spicer not a straight 7 spicer

If he wants a NV-4500 in his first gen, he will need to buy a 5 speed 1st and 2nd gen truck to get all the parts needed...sounds expensive.
I would just go with a Getrag myself, unless cash was not an issue.

I am finishing up a 727 to NV4500 swap. I got less than $2000 in the swap, including going through the transmission. I waited until I could find a screaming deal on all the parts I needed and pieced everything together then installed it. As for the transfer case, I found a 29 spline unit cheap enough, they still can be had for about $750.
