The kits from places like Pure Diesel don't look like they use Cummins parts or gaskets will there be a quality issue? Anyone used a kit such as this?

From what I have heard the Mahile pistons hold up good. Most if not all of the drag and pullers use them.

After market gaskets don't have a good track record. Remember the only gaskets easy to change is the valve covers. Any of the other gaskets and seals get harder to get to and change.

My money goes with cummins gaskets.

Talked to another machine shop this morning and he wants $250 each for over sized pistons. Looks like about a hundred a piece if I order from the states plus shipping. My question is if I get the machining done on my block can I put the pistons on the rods my self or is that something that the shop should do.

IF you have never installed stuff like this, then it would be better for the shop to do it, or if you have a friend that has done this, then go that route and save the labor costs.

Read up on how to pre-lube everything (pistons, rings, main and rod bearings, etc) during re-assembly, and make sure there is no chance of any dirt or grit getting into the rebuilt assembly.

Call up Jeff at Mumua Diesel. Good pricing and he will answer ANY question you have.

A Cummins rebuild kit is around a grand with pistons.

I have assembled lots of gas engines 283s 350s 351w etc just never been inside a cummins before. The last engine I did was a 283 and I had the shop install the pistons on the rods because the pins need to be pressed in to the rods.

For what it's worth I wouldn't worry about all the aftermarket gaskets. Run them and they all should be fine, save one gasket. The hg, that's the only gasket I would want to be genuine cummins. Which is partly why in my last post I had it as an additional cost.

Mahle pistons are fine. I wish I had used mahle pistons when I rebuilt my motor...

Checked with the first machine shop again today. The 5.9 cummins engines they mostly build are oilfield engines and run on natural gas. Which is why the price of the pistons was so high. They just assumed the diesel pistons would be similar.
