4x4 mpgs - Missing my old Dodge CTD
4x4 mpgs - Missing my old Dodge CTD
I sold my 92 D250 CTD a while back. Thought I might like something that got better mpgs - plus I was tired of helping everyone move. Bought a 4cyl Ford Ranger. It gets about 23mpg. It's great - if you don't want to HAUL ANYTHING, TOW ANYTHING or GO UP ANY HILLS. Ok - I admit it - I miss "Big Luck" (my old 92). I even ran it on peanut oil once - try THAT with a Ranger.
So... I might decide to get another 1st gen Dodge, but I think I might like a 4wd. What kind of MPGs do you W250 drivers get? Is it better with a standard trans? Are there more suspension available for the W than the D? Are there any mods to help it get decent MPGs? Help!

Some peaple think that it doesn't make much of a difference between standard and auto for mileage, but i personally have had experiance with both and the standard always wins.
I have a 91 W250 5-spd and can get 23 MPG unloaded. So pretty much the same as your ranger, but i have a full sized truck
My cousin has a 91 W250 auto and it gets about 16 MPG, and we have the same mods done except he has the 16cm housing and i have the 18cm housing..

The guy i bought my truck from said he averaged about 20mpg arounf town and on the highway he got the same, but he liked to run it at 70mph.
Since i bought it i have done a couple mods so it should be better.

I can get a steady 17 in town and almost 22 on the highway. I believe our tanks are 30 gal. according to the owners manual. I usually fill up around a 1/4 tank and it costs me around 40 bucks. That usually gets me close to 250 or 300.
I average just over 19 with my one truck on my 42 mile trip to work, which is alittle bit of stop and go through traffic lights and highway. Of course I can make the figure a frightening 14-15 if I don't take it easy on the right pedal.
My other truck with the utility body, which weighs 1000 lbs. more, gets 15 to 17 on the same trip at the same speeds(70 to 80mph on the highway).

I got about 19.5, about half of it was city driving, and the other half was highway.
I usually keep my right foot in it too. Only mod I have done to mine so far is opening up the air box by cutting a massive whole in the front of it
